It may be for clearance at the wheel.

That is on the other side though?

Ok, limited time today for this but got done what I set out to do and that's comparing portal to portal.

Mad Moose preproduction vs. MST CFX-W

For starters, my Moose Knuckles have a full season on them and gave me very little issue (broke cvd by not trimming my end points properly and pinching up a very heavy class 1 rig at the same time).

The MadMoose axles are maybe an 1/8" narrower.

The issues I have right off the bat is that the MST axle isn't designed for CMS and will have a servo mounted on the axle top. Both axles are the same so making them 4ws is easy enough like the old ax-10 was.

The other issue is the retro, 1980's king pin design on the MST, Phillips head shoulder screw and all.... seriously? Lol.

The MadMoose is a much better design and using bushings makes it easily rebuildable as needed.

The C being removable and clock-able on the MST is nice, more on that later.

The gear designs, small multiple contacts vs beefy

Wheel fitting is about the same. I run RC4WD 1.55 steelies on my Moose axles and are likely the smallest that will fit. The MST fits them the same with a small amount of rub.

Both easily accept kit axial 1.9's

I did try to fit up a set of 1.9 RC4WD rear beadlock wheels but they aren't even close. Widener would be required for both.

I wonder how easy it is to get replacement parts? Any insight?

CVD design is also worth noting as well as the gears for ring and pinion.

MadMoose has been testing theirs for a while and has a solid solution in my opinion and are obviously beefier.

The Moose axles use Vaterra ring and pinions and are a larger pitch than the MST.

All in all, as with most RC products, these two are application based comparable.

I love the scale, CMS ready, pass through ready, and great looking Mad Moose portals. They have served me well in trail and competition based use.

The MST's will see the same duty over this season and I like the splines C's that may give more adjustments for pinion angles. We will have to get them on rocks and trails to know more.

Almost forgot clearance!
Here they are side by side. Same tires, no weights.

Both have the same center clearance

The MadMoose reigns king for portal height!

No idea.... support from Mad Moose is, and has been, easy. Considering the kit made the trek from HK in seven days is promising.

I like the 4 gear setup on the MST.

The MST gears really don't look too bad reminds me of the t-case gears in the scx10 II.

Agreed, they look and feel the same as ascender and scx10ii gears.

I'm liking the mst. The only thing I'm not liking the high placement of the motor. But that could be fixable.

Jr, so the mst chubs will fit on the scx10.2 axles? Or on mst could you use axial universals? The tangs on the axle shafts look the same.

The motor isn't as high as it looks. The top of the can is about even with the shock tower top.

Yes, the spline count is the same as the scx10.2 axles. The axle shafts tangs are different. I am sure that someone out there will make an axle shaft to blend the two and result in a portal hybrid. If I had another week off I could probably see what it would look like.

Are there any spots on this truck that come with bushings instead of bearings? If so could you post up the measurements and quantities? I have a kit coming and want to build it with full ball bearings. Thanks
