Harley's Mega Truck

2 Attachment(s)

I hate mud. Seriously. I have no idea why I would build a truck to specifically drive through it, but after talking with a handful of different people lately I have come to the conclusion that I must try something new.

I will admit that I do enjoy watching the Mega truck videos. Ever since King Sling has hit the dirt I have been impressed by these trucks. They seem to be the closest thing I have seen in full scale that resembles the power and ability of RC trucks.

Recently when RC4WD released their new 1.9 Mud Basher tire, I decided I would build a truck around them. When working out the proportions in comparison to trucks like King Sling, the body was going to have to be TINY.

But I had made a post on my Harley Designs Facebook page and ended up running across a posted link showing some narrowed monster truck tires. A 5.75" tire on a 3.2" wheel with 17mm hexes would be perfect for the size of truck I was shooting for!

So then it was simply time to get into the details...

After deciding on the tires, I scaled the rest of the build off of a picture of King Sling. The wheelbase came to right around 14.5" long which is pretty good in my opinion.

For the body I wanted to go with a truck for sure, and I'm not a huge fan of any of the modern truck bodies. So to Proline I went, decided on the 1972 Chevy C10 for the Revo continued to make progress on the chassis design.

The chassis design is not incredibly intricate but it is based off of the design of similar full size versions. This will be the base for the truck and any additional structure that will need to be added to hold/support the body will be added as we go.

Now for the important part.

SUPER SHAFTY!

Can't say enough about how well Rick takes care of me. I told him about the project and my plans and he immediately shot me down. Said that my choices were too weak for what I wanted to do. Scratch the AR60 axles.

BUILT Mad Force axles added to the list. Super Shafty lockouts, OFNA CVD's, Super Shafty Upper and lower link mounts, Kyosho 17mm hexes and locking wheel nuts.

Attachment 266022

Then for the transmission, a full Super Shafty Bombproof AX10 style case with the biggest outputs available, 8mm, to match the input side of the Mad Force axles.

Attachment 266023

The part that is still undecided is what 1:8 scale power system I'll be using to throw this whole thing around.

Looks good, can't wait to see it. Love monster trucks. I would put an RX8 and T8 in it myself.

Said the ray of sunshine.

Anyway, pretty cool Harley. Seems like you always have a project right on the tail of the previous one, sometimes not even done with the previous one...keeps this place salivating that's for sure.

I'm looking forward to this one, it's branching out a little for me but it still allows to have some fun with fabrication and personalizing. That is something that I find missing in most of the other forms of RC.

If I had to finish a project before moving onto the next thing I'd get sick of the hobby pretty quick! I think I have 4 or 5 active project cars right now.

That's like saying Grave Digger is old news but it's the most popular monster truck next to big foot.

And I still don't see your point? It is a few years old you are correct, however it still seems to be VERY relevant in the mega truck world.

I think the modified tires I'm planning on using are much closer to the look of the full size rigs. They use a bigger wheel and have more aggressive tread. The old Clod wheels are small and that tread isn't aggressive enough I feel.

I just finished up the chassis design and am about to create my tube templates for fabrication.

The chassis consists of 24' of rod, and should weigh in just under 2.5 lbs.

During the design phase I went in and trimmed all the tubes in a way that will be more realistic for fabrication. I am not going to fishmouth any of these things and I am well aware of that, so I take the extra time time to go in and trim everything to straight cuts. It would be MUCH easier to do the fish mouth cuts in CAD, even though they look more complex.
