Caught the Mega Mud Truck Bug. This will be my SMT10 build thread. Cant wait to get started.

Parts are coming inhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a514deb572.jpg

These Fling King tires (gold compound) are impressive at first sight and feel. Coming in at 1.75" wide when mounted to the Jconcepts Dragon wheels. And those wheels that come with wideners and a lexan insert....such a deal. Let's hope they and others release more Mega mud truck tires coming in this skinny, width wise. Just dont have time to cut and shut tires anymore. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9b182eff11.jpg

I like the parts selection. This will be awesome! "thumbsup"

Got the 46' Dodge Power Wagon Cab cut and fitted. Gonna use the bed too, started cutting that. I'll get to that later. Switched the shock springs, front to back. Stiffer ones in the rear. Relocated the front shocks to the axle mounts. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c25bbba880.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7f42b0b1e1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6b80392346.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...dd40ab8e1d.jpg
Time to cut the the bed more, definitely have to get rid of the tailgate, which will just catch mud if left in place. Man this bed is nice, too bad there won't be much left.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...cc01892b8c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bf7ffa31aa.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f2eaa2bf34.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ec9fa51ecd.jpg

That looks bad ass! "thumbsup"

Thanx man, I think the bed section may be too long, not sure yet. Mounting the bed rails to the chassis. I got lucky at full compression the sway bars fit right up inside.

Here some sway bar at full compression pics. Should be fine coming off big jumps.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...578b8843be.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...42fcaed609.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...807c008e0f.jpg
This will do for now, I'm happy with how the Mopar is turning out. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...95a314db4a.jpg

Giving this a go this morning https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...989c0584f0.jpg
Quick results, working nicelyhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...043e34380a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...30d16fedd9.jpg
Looks good, a burgundy Red/Brown. As long as it's not lime green.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...98ea36bc17.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a2cd0103e9.jpg

Nice build you got going on. Does that dye chip or scratch off? And do you like those stock shocks? Been eyeing a set of those myself, but haven't seen too much written about them. I think the bed is good length. Hard to tell though from small phone pics and a clear body.

Hey thanx, haven't ran it yet so I cant comment on the shocks. As far as the dye goes no chipping. You can't scrape it with your fingernail. I do something similar with resin cast pieces for my full time work, so I'm sure there is green in there. But nothing to chip or flake off. It's in the plastic, not on top of it like paint.

Re: I'm Back...SMT10 Mega Mud Build

This almost makes me wish that the Bomber chassis came in a lighter color, so I could die it to achieve that rusty look that a lot of rock-bouncer rigs have...

Clayton Hollingsworth's Outlaw rig, for example.

I'm sure I could scuff it and paint it, but what a pain in the ass!

I used to Rit-dye RPM white wheels into different colors back 15 years ago... works great!

Just don't do the wrong type of plastics, test them first - most (if not all) Tamiya white plastic wheels will just start to deform in hot water, and don't take on any color.

FormallySkullking 06-29-2018 08:50 PM

Re: I'm Back...SMT10 Mega Mud Build

Yeah I achieved this color in less than 15 min. Put the parts in before the boil. They stayed fairly stiff. Then soaked in cold water afterwards to set the dye. Nothing seems deformed. Only boiled for roughly half of the 15 min.

Most manufacturers "flexible" plastics are fine with the dye - and also with being put in really hot or boiling water, it's the brittle stuff you need to watch out for!

Waiting on parts, upgrading the tranny to Incision metal gears. Going to wait for the tranny rebuild before I start putting it back together. I don't have much experience with these AR60 axles. What's the best locking spool out there, from experience do you guys think? Thinking of locking the rear.
I already got the Vanquish rear axle shafts, btw. So maybe the spool that fits with those best?

Rebuilt the tranny, being proactive.

That's way too much grease in the transmission! You only have to lightly coat the gears.

FormallySkullking 07-06-2018 07:02 AM

I'm good man, I've built quite a few of these. 3500kv brushless running through water/mud.

I pack the hell out of everything with grease.

Nice, that's the one I ordered, along with their axle shafts. Now I have the Vanquish ones as extras for a later build.

Would that spool not work with the vanquish axles?

Don't know, probally would but I figure just stay with same manufacturer for best possible fit.

Re: I'm Back...SMT10 Mega Mud Build

I used F1 spools from LURC on Incision Wraith AR60 VDI Universals and on SSD HD centered pumpkin axle shafts without issue...

The trick with tight-fitting spools is doing a fitment test before assembling everything.

If they are too tight to fully seat themselves, you may need to slightly file down the tangs on the ends of the axles or universals.

My second set of axles used Holmes TorqueMaster spools, they are a cutaway design for really light weight, but are currently out of stock everywhere.

I deliberately built one set of axles heavier than the other, for 2 different types of vehicles...
