My slow build of an SMT10.

So I got the monster truck bug after watching some videos. And my LHS happened to have two in stock. I picked up the Max D since it is discontinued, and so I don’t have to dye the chassis. Took it home and immediately ripped out the stock esc and motor. Replaced it with a dynamite esc from my rtr Ascender and a 20t rc4wd motor. So far loving it, it’s not fast but it’s a lot of fun. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c826e518d5.jpg

Re: My slow build of an SMT10.

While running the other day I had noticed I lost power to the front axle. Thought I had broke the outdrive, turns out the screws had backed out hold the outdrives together. Didn’t want to break the bank on trans parts so I opted for the Axial powdered metal gear for 7$ and an Integy aluminum case for 16$. We’ll see how long the hold up. I also swapped the plastic slipper bushing out for a bearing, probably not needed but I like the piece of mind. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a65a60d42a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...92e0b52d48.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...89f1651f4f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0ff031b3fe.jpg

Nice, I'm still waiting on parts to arrive, but hope to start my SMT10 upgrades soon.

I knew it would happen, question was when lol. So far upgrades are working great.

I’ve been playing with the truck a lot lately and I love it. It’s pretty stock and fairly slow (maybe 15mph) but man it’s a lot of fun. Installed a front sway bar and man does it make a big difference in handling. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2e7c2656ff.jpg

Nice. Still watching to see what else you do with it. Unfortunately for me... there were some hiccups in the shipping for my parts. Hopefully all here by mid-week so that I can start though.

Thanks! Waiting on parts is the worst. My plan is to run it until things start to fail. And figure out a body to run on it.

Where did you find the factory sway bar for the front? I can’t find the parts by themselves.

Congrats. They are fun trucks once you throw some power in them and make them durable.

You might want to put that Max-D body away. It might be worth money in a little bit since they've been discontinued.

Funny you mention that. I was planning to get a running body for mine as well.

One day it’ll be brushless, for now just toying around with it slowly. Still so much fun. And the Max-D body is in a nice safe place just for that reason lol.

Re: My slow build of an SMT10.

Added so power to my somewhat anemic SMT today. Picked up a Sidewinder 4 with a 4600kv-1406 motor. Running on 2s with 13/56 gearing. Hardly gets warm and had plenty of power. I’m almost scared to try it on 3s.... almost. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8c51587887.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d6e5147564.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...20af4f8e2d.jpg

How did 3s pan out?

Re: My slow build of an SMT10.

Probably blew it to bits.. :lmao:

Though, honesty forces me to admit I tried a Castle 5700kv on 3s.
Ran a tad hot, even on a smaller pinion. Truck also became a rather uncontrollable land-missile.

I decided it was a “tad” too much, and went back to 3450kv on 2s  Nothing broke, though. However, I didn’t attempt any jumping and such, just blowing by full throttle in a straight line, careful turning, and straight line full tilt again, trying to keep those blithering front wheels on the ground.... Lasted all of 12minutes on a 5amp 3s Traxxas pack. Ooff.

Far too nerve-wrecking for an old fart like me.

Re: My slow build of an SMT10.

may i recomend a 9kv motor on 2s?

i have 87spur and wide range of pinions. (i like 11 tooth)

with the 43/13 diff's its got great super slow, but also has top end if needed. The 9KV means that every jump is launched level , strait , and even nose up when needed.

my only isses with the high rpm motor is if the spur/pinion mesh isnt purfect, its too late to fix or adjust, another spur gear toast!

with the 9kv motor and 10tooth pinion, i can pull my 4 year old around our yard too!

i didnt know, this is sad. i hope axial has some new bodies for the smt10, or perhaps its near end of life ?

The Grave Digger version is still available from Axial. I don't think this truck was as popular as they had expected.

But JConcepts and Proline offer bodies that will fit.

Re: My slow build of an SMT10.

One thing i never got or understood, is why manufactures limit themselves to kits like this.
anyone who buys a smt10, will enjoy it like crazy, but they arent going to put orginal parts back on if it breaks. "aftermarket here i come"

axial had a chance with these trucks, as everyone who comes up to me in public and asks about it, is a potential sale. What hurts is they find a truck "online " that isnt quite the same because its not stock.

if you do the math, axial could have sold these for 500 bucks with all the right upgrades, mabey 550 with battery. TRAXXAS has been sucessful with doing this, and granted traxxas isnt top teir race stuff, they take beatings like very few do. A RC MONSTER TRUCK is expected to fill some big shoes and the smt10 was close. transmissions that failed because of plastic gears was the worst error.
i really like the SMT10 and i am also grateful it was born, its just sad that a 200 tamiya buggy can last longer before failure.

traxxas fan or not, has been sucessful with this formula. reminds me of the auto industry and the race for better cars. The americians made cars and parts that lasted 100,000 miles and that was the goal. just replace the parts and your good to go.
japan and germany would look at the failed parts and figure out why they failed, update the failure and keep going up in quality.
dont misunderstand me, i happen to enjoy ALL cars, its just very obvious when you work on them, and see the effort manufactures put in.

RIP saturn. (before gm bought them)
