Axial mashup monster truck - centre open diff?

I am currently putting together a few spare parts to build a monster truck/basher.

Main components are:

Wraith diffs with wideners - have open centres on order.

SCX10 chassis (knockoff) with a HSP/Redcat (AX10 knockoff) chassis bolted to it as a gearbox drop.

HSP/Redcat centre gearbox.

Hobbyking sensored brushless and esc - cant remember the KV.

I will look at gearing options and tyres after the chassis is sorted but I'm wondering what are the pros and cons of an open centre differential and what options are available from various manufacturers that will take driveshafts on the outputs. Most I have found have dogbone cups built into the output.

Lookin good so far! Does your trans use dogbone outputs? Im not familiar with that trans. Im using a axial scx10 trans in my m/t. It has the grub pin style outputs. Idk if u can swap the output shafts on yours or not, but may be worth lookin into.

If u need more ideas on your build, check out my build here in the m/t section

Wow here I was thinking I was unique. They are almost identical haha.

Yeah I'm using an axial trans copy. What I'm looking for is an open centre transmission that would suit an axial (outputs to driveshafts). I'm not sure that I need an open centre transmission though.

Looks like all your diffs are still locked yeah? Have you thought about using slippy diffs at all? I'm not worried about losing crawler ability as I have another truck for that.

Open centre diff in these is pretty low on options,
Losi Baja/Rock Rey trans has centre diff with a output shaft to the rear but still a dog bone cup to the front.
Might be possible the piece of LOS232012 thats the rear output may be able to fit into the front also

Just a half baked, not all together well thought out idea here, but what about a 2wd Slash/Rustler/Bandit trans?
They're 5mm output shaft stubs.
Turn it 90deg so the outputs face front n back, mount to the skid through the "wings" off the lower case that the lower arms normally mount from.

Will be tougher than any Axial based diff arrangement.

+1 old reliable "Magnum 272" tranny from traxxas… Used to use these all the time.

Never thought of usin open diffs. I like the closed diffs in mine. Its not really for crawlin/climbin as it is for just a lil speed bashin. I never even thought about the magnum trans, very good suggestion! May help u out alot

Re: Axial mashup monster truck - centre open diff?

Thanks for the heads up on the Traxxas transmission. Looks to be exactly what I was after. I have my eye on one currently listed on eBay.

I fitted the front open centre last night, will do the rear when I get home from work and decide if I want to change the centre transmission or not.

I seriously need to look at changing the gearing on this truck asap. I had a little play with it on the weekend and as it sits now it's just boring. Not capable enough to be a crawler and not fast enough to be a basher. It felt insanely overpowered when it was a wroncho because it was so prone to rollovers and wheelstands but now with such a low centre of gravity it just kind of drives around with no sense of being on the edge.

Wat gearing are u runnin? Wat size motor u runnin?

I was runnin 32p 54t spur n 17t pinion n it was rinnin way hot on 4s. I dropped my pinion down to 14t, but havent got to run it it to see how it does now. I was pullin wheelies on command with the 17t. Im also runnin locked diffs n trans too

I'm running 32p 15T and 60T.

3S Battery with this motor: https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-...___store=en_us

I think I might drop to a 50T. Seems like I will be getting even more reduction if I use the Traxxas trans (2.72 ratio vs the current 2.6) so I will also need to offset that, though bigger wheels will help - the current ones are 130mm.

An exc 2wd transmission bolts right in and will give you open center diff. For another 30 bucks you can get all metal gears. That transmission is almost the same as an scx10 transmission, same manufacturer, with a few extra mounting holes on the top. Probably could even just buy the metal gear kit and install it in an scx10/ax10 transmission if you have one already.
