Default 1/24 Basher Rocksta upgrades

I got my Basher Rocksta a few months ago. There are a couple threads from a a couple years ago about upgrades for it, but very little recently.

Does anyone else have a Rocksta? What upgrades have you done? I'm looking for tire/wheel suggestions, and shock upgrade suggestions. I grabbed a set of metal gears for the front and rear already and had to replace one of the servos.

Let's see what people have come up with.

I run mine with no shocks and the basher super sonic motors and metal gears rc4wd wheels you just have to drill out the center and scrambler tires

I was looking at some older threads and saw people cut down some 1/18 scale wheels and make a micro set of comp tires.

I was also checking out the RC4WD wheels and the Scrambler tires. How much larger are they than the stock ones? Was there a huge difference?

I have one! Metal gears, metal geared servos, two esc's so I can do dig! I do have scramblers on order. I am hoping I can fit them on the stock rims. Maybe...maybe not. Check out my videos:

dweano: Your link goes to 3 videos of the Rocksta, but i found the 4th metal gear install video on your channel. You should add that to the playlist. Great videos by the way.

I'm going to try to make a new cage/body for mine in blender. A local university near me will slice and 3D print things for $1.50 per hour. Looking at it, I should only need to make sure the 8 mounting screws on each side line up to hold the ESC/battery box and the lower link mounts. My only concern at this point is getting the upper shock mounts correct.

The losi micro crawler shocks i found are 43mm extended and 33mm at full compression. A little bit longer than the stock setup, but i don't think they will compress as much which might hinder performance more than help.

Does anyone have any suggestions to make the stock suspension better? Redesigning the cage i can move things around. This is my first jump into anything this small and intricate.

Here's mine:
my basher rocksta

The scrambler tires are quite larger than stock, but are ok, as stock are not big.
Grip is great, they're really soft. They make the rocksta taller and that is a bit of an issue. The joy of crawling is not ruined, but changing the tires made me want to try to improve the suspension somehow - I plan to use my second rocksta kit to build a custom crawler.

I'll try and get a chassis drawn in cad and then cut from carbon sheet - something looking like the 2.2 comp crawlers, that would also require custom suspension.

The suspension is where I am hung up currently. I can't seem to find a set of shocks that have enough travel. Maybe i'm overthinking it, but the 1cm of travel on the losi shocks seems really small.

Is there an information thread on creating custom links that anyone can recommend?

I have a rocksta on order and am superstoked to get my kids playing with it.
i am upgrading to metal geared servo's, metal gears for the boxes, and maybe an upgrade of the motors soon, but i figure i will let them burn some components out first. They are young, but never too young to get the bug, right?

That looks awesome!! What size tires and how did you attach your truck body?? I was looking at the rc4wd 1.0 tires, but I don’t want them to be too small. I don’t care about “scale” looks lol.

Just purchased 3 of these for the kids. Does anybody know where I can get the "optional metal gears"?

They were available all over eBay just a few days ago

Edit: gears are back in stock at hobbyking

I think the biggest upgrade to the motor side of things in my case was to change the motor case for a ball bearing neu magnet one. Kenon Hobby has them (10BB8, plus they also have some real good motors as well. As far as tires go Miclaws are cool looking but you wont find them anywhere anymore! Not for a good price anyway. The 1/18 tires (HSP-Parts-58029) I used on my video worked great but honestly made crawling too easy and did take a bit of the fun away. As far as chassis goes you can do anything you like with this guy being MOA. I posted free downloads of my Spider chassis for it on Thingiverse if you have a 3d printer of course.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2834078

I also have the Stingray Chassis, but that one is not free ;)

Guys, love what yall are doing with your Bashers. So good to hear nice mods can be done to these affordable micro crawlers on the market. I have a nice modded sumo crawler. Question: does anyone know if the rocksta metal gears might fit on the sumo crawler? Sure would be nice to have metal gears for it!!

Just for fun and sharing, Here is a little article on my homemade, south Louisiana crawler course and my micro and mini crawlers (no using the Losi mini anymore):Built to Rock: A Custom, Small-Scale R/C Crawler Course! [Pics].
