Either way the crawler you posted isn't a sumo clone. It's a Losi micro clone.
It has worm gear axles and is supposedly identical to the ECX and HSP version.
For sumo axles look for the redcat sumo, 1/24 Reely, HBX devastor, or even the new 1/24 barrage which has axles with identical dimensions and the same ring gear as the sumo.
All of these are only 4" wide however. I'd think going an extra inch and a half would give you a horrible scrub radius.
The RC4WD 1/18 mini gelande yota 2's are an extra 1/4" over the sumo, but still seems short. If anything I'd widen the sumo/HBX/Barrage axles. That would give a more true to scale pumpkin. There may still be pix of the mod in the micro crawler sub forum

Will any other transmission work with the Losi/Slickrock axles? There are used axles available but I haven’t seen any trannys. I know they’re geared different and I don’t want a basher.

I don't know about the slickrock/Losi mini. Those are 1.55 1/18 minis the ones I mentioned are 1.0 1/24 micro.
I'd imagine you could use any transmission with the right driveshaft ends. As far as gearing you could always use a smaller pinion and larger spur.

That’s what I was thinking on the Mini axles. But I didn’t wanna spend $75 on axles and then need as much $$ in building a tranny from parts bags. The ECX/HSP/RGT axles are nonexistent by themselves.

I went ahead and pulled the fleaBay trigger on some axles. My notes have the LMC/Slickrock axles to be 140mm hex to hex. The B-1 and this C14 use the same axles but the C14 body looks to be slightly narrower. Hopefully the wheels/tires aren't completely poked outside the body but I'll be happy if it looks like a TF2 on ar60s, too, just so long as it performs.

Found this 370 canned planetary and will see if it’ll work. 6v=322rpm and 12v=630rpm. Should be around 400rpm on 2s. Then use a 1:1 transfer case to the axles.

Research says the LMC trans is 7.5 to 1. Combined with stock 14/69 gears to make 32.56 to 1. Theoretically with 2s and a 2100kV motor that’s about 515rpm to the axles. So I’ll need a different motor or go 3s. Or it may just sit pretty on a shelf and I can do a mini comp crawler. LOL.

If I buy a RTR version of one of these, how hard is it to swap in a proportional steering servo with the electronics that come with it?

You’ll need a new ESC and Rx, too. May as well get the kit with a servo already with it.

So the esc/rx is one whole unit. And you can't just plug up the regular newer servo?

I had the WPL-B and I didn't like it. What electronics are you guys going to use in the kits?

Yes, the Rx/ESC is one unit and is junk. You may be able to solder in a proper Rx but when you can get a $6 10a or 20a ESC why even bother. There's plenty of room for every thing to fit inside.

Honestly it's toy grade junk. The scale bodies are the only thing these WPLs have going for them. They're an oddball size, too. If there were a little bigger or a little smaller then it'd be wildly more popular because you could run micro axles or mini axles, something solid and accessible. I ordered some Losi Mini axles and will give it a go. Looking forward to everything showing up to my mailbox but dreading it at the same time. I'd love to make this work but I am a Yota fan, too.

I guess aslong as the transmission is decent I'd be willing to buy it and tinker with it. I'm not a huge yota fan but I think it looks awesome.

Does anyone know how well the trannys hold up?

Honestly, the transmission is junk, too. It's too fast and the driveshafts are crap. The entire drivetrain is junk, IMHO. The chassis and body are about all that's usable if you actually wanna crawl with it. If you want to scale it out and put it on a shelf to look at, then go for it. There are several threads on RCG about it. 3D print file for a new tranny to use two n20 geared motors to drive each axle. Best and cheapest alternative to make it work ASAP. I'm getting one printed for either the GAZ or the B-1.

So from the sounds of it - it's a 35 dollar car that needs another 70 bucks easily to "crawl"

No I didn't pay 300 for a scx10 and spend 600 on it to get it to crawl. I know in comparing toy grade to hobby but I was hoping it would be semi decent out of the box.

Like maybe just needs new axles and servo.

Doesn't sound like it

I was thinking that the Rc4wd 1/18 Yota axles might work, and also, I learned that a micro servo fits almost perfectly in the steering gear’s place.

What’s the deal with the model with the bed? I’ve seen it on the boxes in YT videos but never seen the actual full bodied truck.

A micro servo fits in place of the steering servos place is that what you mean.

Yes not perfectly but it fits in the area. You could use something like an scx10 servo mount, or hot glue or double sides tape because of the low weight of the little truck.
