Default Micro Crawler Advice.

Hi guys,

I currently have a ECX Temper 1/24 crawler and so far I love this little thing. I have built a small rock crawling spot in my back yard and I wanted to move to a better crawler. What do you guys recommend as a micro crawler to improve from my ECX? I like the Proline Ambush, RC4WD 1/18 RTR or Redcat Sumo.

Thanks in advance

I'd suggest the Proline Ambush over the RC4WD. Look at the issues you get out of the box with the 1/18th D90 before you decide to buy one...

Thanks

Is it worth it to upgrade my Ecx?

The ECX is a great little crawler with the right mods. I bought a lynx micro tech bouncer chassis off shapeways, now the little ECX goes anywhere. Its a much better crawler than my Ambush.

Why not the sumo? It's definitely an upgrade from the ecx. With a few upgrades, people are pleased with it's crawl. I don't have an ecx but I do have the wltoys copy of it. The sumo is modded but I think it was still better with just the battery upgrade than the wltoys is with mods. I did change the crap out of the stock suspension.

Yeah I bought some 1/8th offset wheel from the same store and also got some RC4WD tires. You'll need to move the servo forward and rotate the rear servo carrier around or make new links. I use the stock links and the stock base plate with a little bit of material removal. You can also get heaps more steering by removing some material from the steering link.

A 2s battery will work too but its a bit fast for me. So I swapped that out for a cheap 20a esc from ebay that has a bit more throttle control.

This overall is a very cheap and effective mod for the little ECX.

Do you have a link or the name for the ESC and Battery you are using?

The Losi MRC was the best mini crawler that I know of. That might be an upgrade over your ECX.

I love the RC4WD Gelande, but it does need fiddling to get sorted ie towerpro mg958 servo motor for power. Even then its more of a scale trail truck than a dedicated crawler unless you heavily modify it.

It's a turnigy 2s 500mah. I use smaller 2s batteries but this one provides a lot of crawl time.

Hi guys.

Just a bit of an update.

I ended up giving the ECX temper to my wife's little cousin but I purchased a WL Toys 1/24 Crawler for myself. I also ordered some tires, wheels, esc, batteries and a scale chassis. I will post pics later

Good looking little crawler! Should give the ECX/Redcat/HSP/Exceed 1/16 crawler a try one of these days. The step up in size makes modifications easier and they tend to be a bit more stable. They are a decent little clone of the Losi Mini Crawler.

Thanks.

I will give the 1/16 a try once I am done with this one

I have a 1/24 sumo modded nicely with the biggest rc4wd tires/wheel it can take. Have not done the lipo mod yet but probably will. When you are tired of the limitations of 1/24 scale and the difficultly of working on such a small rig, find yourself a used 1/18 Losi mini crawler. I have one now, it came modded with some nice stuff like oil filled shocks and bent links. It is a HUGE increase in performance and a lot easier to work on. You can also turn it into a scaler too. I've had to mod my backyard crawler course to make it harder but that was a lot of fun!
