Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis I have started a new project. It is a Tonka M*A*S*H Jeep. I bought the WPL B1 kit because the gears in the center axle of the 6X6 are metal and I figured I could use the spare misc. parts. I'll take some better photos and add better descriptions when it comes back apart for finishing. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1887/...62f0c15c_b.jpgTonka RC Jeep (3)Small by captaininsano1000, on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1858/...ea9eeafc_z.jpgTonka RC Jeep (5)Small by captaininsano1000, on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1873/...07313324_z.jpgTonka RC Jeep (6)Small by captaininsano1000, on Flickr |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis Looks cool. Deff a nice change to the WPL. |
Axle Over Spring I am going axle over spring to get the gap between the body and the wheels to look decent. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1849/...14efc830_c.jpgTonka RC Axles (2) by captaininsano1000, on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1879/...32738e73_c.jpgTonka RC Axles (1) by captaininsano1000, on Flickr |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis I put a couple of c-notches in the frame for the axle articulation. I would prefer to build a frame with a shape similar to a real CJ5 but this project is already more work than expected. I didn't want to hack up the Tonka chassis more than needed. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1887/...c8df934d_c.jpgNotched Frame Tonka by captaininsano1000, on Flickr |
Steering And Motor Mount I made some progress on the Tonka conversion this morning. It now has a tie bar and a drag link. I'll make a better drag link at some point. I hooked a servo up to it and it turns. Space is tight between the springs and the frame but nothing rubs right now. I also fabbed up an aluminum motor mount and epoxied it to the motor/transfer case. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1857/...5ce82daa_c.jpgIMG_8161 by captaininsano1000, on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1923/...50fe40b4_c.jpgIMG_8158 by captaininsano1000, on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1966/...cf9d5a01_c.jpgIMG_8157 by captaininsano1000, on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1959/...2f9f44e8_c.jpgIMG_8156 by captaininsano1000, on Flickr |

Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis The gearbox hangs down pretty low. I didn't want to cut a transmission tunnel into the Tonka chassis yet. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1930/...cf6bd6dd_c.jpgRC Tonka Conversion (8) by captaininsano1000, on Flickr |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis What about doing a body lift so you can raise the tranny up? Looks pretty low to leave it to me. The best height for the tranny would be flush or a little below the frame, but that may be alot of fabbing. |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis The body is diecast? How heavy is it? It looks great, almost like it should be a kit on its on. |

Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis Kool! "thumbsup" |
Weigh I put the Tonka RC on a scale last night and weighted in at 26.55 OZ Tonka RC: 26.55 OZ Unmodified Non-RC Tonka Jeep: 18.15 OZ WPL B-1 4x4 Weight(From Gearbest Website): 21.04 OZ |
Re: Weigh Quote:
That's not much of an additional weight at all. It's good to know since whenever I start browsing body options for vehicles at this scale it almost inevitably means I start looking at Maisto bodies and the like. |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis This ran for the first time over the weekend and it ran well unto it it didn't. I am running these upgraded drive shafts and the shafts themselves seem to be pretty decent. The set screws stripped out before I could get them tight enough. I have better set screws in there and I am am going to file some flat spots on the pinion gear shaft. https://www.banggood.com/2PCS-Upgrad...?rmmds=myorder |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis Very cool build. What size is the jeep or how did you find it on the internet? Ie, what to search. |

I just went to eBay and searched for Tonka Jeep. I spent $20 delivered for the green M*A*S*H Jeep and $15 on a red Jeep which will be built using a WPL C-24 kit. I ran it up my son's slide yesterday which is on a 43 degree incline. It looks like that is about the maximum angle it will climb before it flips over backwards. |

Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis I just received my bigger motor and gearbox. I'm going to drive it as it sits until I break something and then pop one of these in. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1932/...db10827c_c.jpgIMG_7833 by captaininsano1000, on Flickr |

Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis The banggood drive shafts and the stock pinion gear shafts don't like each other. These are the shafts that are splined and have to be filed down to accept the metal shafts. I should have done a better job putting a flat spot on them for the set screws. It will be getting a full drive-train upgrade over the next week or so. |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis I keep losing drive shafts and the low hanging transfer case gets stuck on a lot of stuff. This project is going back into the shop for a drive train swap. |
Motor And Transmission Swap I swapped in the new motor, planetary transmission, and transfer case. The Jeep is much slower now but the torque is noticeably better. I think this is a 370 motor but I am really not sure. If anybody knows for sure, please let me know. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4889/...76ba48d5_c.jpgIMG_8214 by captaininsano1000, on Flickr |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis The rear driveshaft is the stock length. The front driveshaft was shortened a lot. I am going to build an angled skid for the transfer case to allow it to slide over obstacles. I have one on the rear diff of my 1:1 rig and it works great. This case does sit quite a bit higher than my initial attempt. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4847/...5120a068_c.jpgMotorSwap by captaininsano1000, on Flickr |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis I am either going to build a transmission tunnel or paint the transfer case black. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4842/...4c9b7dc9_c.jpgIMG_8217 by captaininsano1000, on Flickr |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis Where did you get the transfercase? TIA Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk |
Re: Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis The motor, indeed, looks like a 370, aka “400-type” Makes for easy upgrades. *ponders* Hmm..400-size BL outrunner in JJRC MAN Kat1... Got a few small outrunners laying about from my airboats..Get me a metal gearbox like Yours..... *shuffles off to workshop, softly, incoherently, mumbling to self* |

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/WPL-...27424c4dxd7fJN Sorry, wrong link. The planetary gearbox that came with this transfer case made the rig way too slow. I ended up buying a faster planetary gearbox off of amazon. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Heng...27424c4dxd7fJN https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I only used the 400 RPM gearbox from the amazon purchase, I installed the motor that came with the transfer case. |
