Default Tonka Jeep On WPL B-1 Chassis

I have started a new project. It is a Tonka M*A*S*H Jeep. I bought the WPL B1 kit because the gears in the center axle of the 6X6 are metal and I figured I could use the spare misc. parts. I'll take some better photos and add better descriptions when it comes back apart for finishing.

Default Axle Over Spring

I am going axle over spring to get the gap between the body and the wheels to look decent.

I put a couple of c-notches in the frame for the axle articulation. I would prefer to build a frame with a shape similar to a real CJ5 but this project is already more work than expected. I didn't want to hack up the Tonka chassis more than needed.

Default Steering And Motor Mount

I made some progress on the Tonka conversion this morning. It now has a tie bar and a drag link. I'll make a better drag link at some point. I hooked a servo up to it and it turns. Space is tight between the springs and the frame but nothing rubs right now. I also fabbed up an aluminum motor mount and epoxied it to the motor/transfer case.

Default Battery And ESC

The battery and ESC are sandwiched between the plastic Tonka chassis and the metal Tonka body.

The ESC power switch and balance charger plug come out from under the dash.

The gearbox hangs down pretty low. I didn't want to cut a transmission tunnel into the Tonka chassis yet.

What about doing a body lift so you can raise the tranny up? Looks pretty low to leave it to me. The best height for the tranny would be flush or a little below the frame, but that may be alot of fabbing.

The body is diecast? How heavy is it? It looks great, almost like it should be a kit on its on.

After having some time to think about it I am going to make a transmission tunnel like on a real CJ-5. I think I can get it up just high enough to look decent and perform well.

The body is die-cast. It is the Tonka M*A*S*H set number 9625. It isn't as heavy as I would have expected. I'll throw it on a scale and see what it weights.

That's not much of an additional weight at all. It's good to know since whenever I start browsing body options for vehicles at this scale it almost inevitably means I start looking at Maisto bodies and the like.

This ran for the first time over the weekend and it ran well unto it it didn't. I am running these upgraded drive shafts and the shafts themselves seem to be pretty decent. The set screws stripped out before I could get them tight enough. I have better set screws in there and I am am going to file some flat spots on the pinion gear shaft.

Very cool build. What size is the jeep or how did you find it on the internet? Ie, what to search.

The Jeep is 10" long. The wheelbase is 6.375". The track width is 5.5"

I just went to eBay and searched for Tonka Jeep. I spent $20 delivered for the green M*A*S*H Jeep and $15 on a red Jeep which will be built using a WPL C-24 kit.

I ran it up my son's slide yesterday which is on a 43 degree incline. It looks like that is about the maximum angle it will climb before it flips over backwards.
