Nylint Ford Econoline Conversion - Misc. WPL Parts

I am waiting on a lot of metal pieces to come in for the Tonka RC Jeep Conversion so I started another project.

The tires are for a HBX 1/18 truck of some sort.

The wheels have a 8MM hex so I used a tap and die set to thread the WPL shafts and used 8MM nuts to hold the wheel.

To get the right track width, I had to modify the steering knuckles to clear the wheels. The stock one is on the left, the modified one is on the right.

My original plan was to use WPL leaf springs but I am going to have a lot of these parts left over from another build so I figured I'd use them.

Re: Nylint Ford Econoline Conversion - Misc. WPL Parts

I am going to use two N20 gearmotors to power the wheels. I should have ordered N30 motors but it is too late now. They are 1000 RPM output motors. I don't know if that is going to be too fast but since these things cost $2.00, it will just reorder if needed.

Very cool project! I can't wait to see it finished and running.

That high of a speed from that small motor will create very little torque. I have the 600rpm ones that Adrian202 tried out, and it is ungodly slow but has a bit more torque. Not to mention all those metal gears are LOUD!

I was afraid of that but I was emotionally scarred from another motor I installed on my first Tonka RC conversion that was way to slow and had way more torque than needed. I didn't consider the noise so I guess I'll see how that goes.

I epoxied the nuts to the threaded plastic axles to keep them from unscrewing themselves and true up the wheels as much as possible. One of them has some wobble to it but not a ton.

Re: Nylint Ford Econoline Conversion - Misc. WPL Parts

The shocks I bought are terrible. I bought the shorter ones in the link below. They bind up really easily. I think it has to do with the offset on the upper mount.

There are a few minor rubbing issues with the front suspension and the tires but I think it can all be dialed out.

Servo Mounting

I just made a couple of brackets out of misc. RC pieces. The stock pitman arm will be replaces with a metal link when it arrives from the China.

You were indeed correct. This machine is now running and does fine on carpet and hardwood but can't climb anything. I'm going to try to find some bigger motors.

This is a cool build "thumbsup" , where did you get the body?

Here's my 1:1 I had back in '85, it was a '66

The body is an old Nylint truck that belonged to my dad.

Motor Swap

Since my two small N30 motors didn't have enough power, I have worked up a different solution using a motor from Aliexpress bolted to a planetary gearbox.

Motor: FATJAY 2430 5800 KV Brushless motor hooked to a 10:1 planetary gearbox.

I am not sure if this motor/transmission combo will work but I am going to give it a try and see what happens.
