SCX24 ESC & receiver upgrades?

I need to replaced the stock 2-in-1 combo with a separate ESC and a flysky FS-bs6 receiver in my SCX24.

What esc is recommended? Is the Xys-bl20a still a good choice? Any other recommendations?

XYS-BL20A if you want something cheap and basic.
Castle micro (preferably side winder for size) or Tekin B1R if you want something super smooth with programmable throttle curves.

I was hoping castle might have something, but their sidewinder looks to be for brushless setups.

The tekin looks nice.

It's both brushed and brushless. You just change the settings in the software.

Whoa. Maybe they should make that more of an advertised feature! LOL

Yea I'm not sure why so many people assume it's brushless only. Maybe because of the 3 wires. Afaik all castle surface ESCs do both brushed and brushless

This and because any searches with "brushed" in it don't yield any usable results. I only see brushed mentioned as a mode option in the manual, but not the specs or product page [emoji44]

On that topic...

I bought the mamba micro x for my RC4WD mini. It can do brushed.

BUT!

In order to switch it to brushed (it comes in brushless mode), you’ll need the 20 dollar link cable.

Since mine came in brushless mode. I could not switch it over to brushed manually using the radio and counting beeps. Because my motor was so small and it being in brushless, caused me to not hear any beeps to manually program.

So count on needing that cable bash.

And it will GREATLY smooth out throttle control. You can actually make your own torque curve in it.

That said. I’d try the 20 dollar Esc first. I have a mamba in my mini. The 15 dollar China esc in my hbx. And while the mamba is much better. I’m not positive it’s necessary. Especially with worm gears.

Oh, I've already got several cables and programming cards for Castle ESC's [emoji23][emoji23]

Which is a good point. A mamba micro is almost as expensive as this entire truck, so if the difference isn't worth the extra dough, I'd rather try something else first. I really just want to change everything up so I can use my flysky radio [emoji23]

If anyone needs a voucher for a free Castle link cable PM me I have 3 that I dont need. The Micro X should include a voucher as well but you'll need to wait for the cable to be mailed to you.

This is my first worm gear rig and I'm not familiar with why they act the way they do. Is it just extra friction?

I have a BR mini and would just need to redo the battery and motor wires which are meant for 1/10 scale, should take off a lot of weight just doing that. As it sits now its 1.5 oz and it has a nice small footprint

So, would a HW1080 work, or is it too much for the small motor? I've got a sealed one in a box that I was planning on using in a 1/10 rig, but if it would work, I may just use it here. It's about 20g more than the Mamba micro X and only a slightly larger footprint.

Usually worm gears have a crazy high reduction ratio so it takes very little effort from the motor to hold the drivetrain in place because of the mechanical advantage. My best guess looking at the gears is the SCX24 is around 16:1 at the axle.

Good to see how the BRXL fits in there, I got a good deal on a Tekin BXR (which is about the same size) so one of those will find it's way into my truck.

Then totally get a china ESC without brake. The Mamba micro X is better suited for the RC4WD sized mini. Something with some weight to make use of the crawler/rock racer mode. I think the mamba micro or sidewinder would be way overkill for these light weight guys.

But they are nice if you got the money. I have one and am keeping it in my heavy RC4WD mini. If and when I change the radio out on the SCX24, I will most likely try another china esc first.

I tried that. My 1080WP would not recognized the FF-030 motor. However the stock 1/10 ESC off my vaterra ascender or ecx doomsday worked fine.

That was my first go to choice too.

Worth an ask "thumbsup" Thanks for saving me time.

Well, Gearbest says the XYS-BL20A is discontinued and Amazon (Canada) says no longer available. Any alternatives in this price range or should I try to find one regardless? LOL

I run this in my HBX.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Works fine for me.

Not on Amazon.ca, unfortunately.

I did spot this, which has forward/reverse/break - not sure if you can program it with no break: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07MRDR6L4/

There's a switch on the board, then a wired switch - I wonder if the one of the board is to adjust the drive mode (break on/off).

I think the "brake" part means you have to double tap back to get into reverse. I seem to remember being told to get one WITHOUT brake if I wanted instant reverse which I do. That said, I dont know much about these or how they work the brake function.

But I cant stand having to double tap for reverse.

Yea whats that switch do! If it does something I might buy one now that I realized mine is only 10amp..lol.

EDIT:

I found some like yours on my amazon and one of the reviews said the "hill hold" feature worked well. Im willing to bet its that switch. I will be buying one now too..lol.

That's exactly what the "break" part means, and I'm quite familiar with this mode on 1/10 scalers, but you can always disable the feature in larger ESC's - not sure about this one. I can't see what else the switch on the board would be for. Doesn't indicate anything when you zoom into the photo
