Default making jst-2.0 PH plugs

going to be making some plugs for my SCX24

what is the correct size of the die I need in the crimper? not sure if there is a male and female side needed? ok, looks like they are not the same size?

The crimped portion is the same on both M & F. The die size should be the same as whatever gage of wire you're using (probably 22-24ga)

But honestly, it'd be much easier to just make a JST2.0->JST adapter to leave in the esc and just switch all your batteries over to JST.

Crimping those tiny pins is extremely difficult to do well.

so I actually found some jst 2 ph plugs in my bag of stuff..... tried to make my own, with just needle nose pliers.... screw that mess....

I really hate extra connectors and harnesses and splices, but I am just going to pick something and solder... might even just order male and female jst 2.0 ph with leads already to splice together....

WELL: just ordered some JST 2 PH connectors with leads, and ordered some 3:1 adhesive heatshrink in some smaller sizes.... will be here on Saturday. Also ordered a MIP .05 hex driver

I would advise against soldering as it makes a solid section inside the cable insulation which leaves it very prone to failure due to vibration.

Crimping can be fiddly but just needs a little care and practice to get good joints. I'm in my 60s with weak eyes and shakier hands than I would like but I can still get good crimps with a fairly cheap eBay SN-28B crimp tool and a good wire stripper. See the video which hits all of the points you need to know.

https://youtu.be/n03UMDyQXpE

A little practice on this now and before you know it you will be reterminating your servo leads just to help tidy up your wiring.

ugh.... making me spend more $$$$$$$

ok, so for sure, I need the SN28B?

how is IWISS for a crimper? I don't want to attempt it with crappy tools, but not trying to spend Snap-on $ either.....

IWISS on Amazon is $22.99 https://smile.amazon.com/IWISS-Termi...0775851&sr=8-4

Yep. Us guys just hate spending money on tools. Ask my wife.

Looks like a good crimp tool. Stripping cleanly and to the correct length is also important.

With my old-man eyes I like good lighting when crimping. Once you can see what you are doing then the rest is just steady hands when crimping. You have to make sure the wire stays in the right place while you squeeze. I have big hands so a single squeeze works for me, smaller hands simply need to use the ratcheting ability of the tool.

Dry practice squeezing the tool while holding a wire in place a few times to get the feel. Remember you need to be able to see the wire stays in place while crimping. Once you have it down go ahead and terminate. Insert your own Arnold joke.

Well that sucks..... going to buy the connectors with leads and solder with heatshrink.

All I am doing with this crimper is smashing terminals and running out of connectors

I am going to terminate my attempts at making this work...

At least I have an awesome solder station! Hakko FX888D

Never had an issue crimping these with a small set of needle nose. Maybe your needle nose are to big to crimp one ear at a time?

I tried. I sucked.

Then got the correct tool, or the one mentioned here. And just still destroying them.

If it matters, I do have bear claws (and not the pastry kind)

You may be crimping them upside down possibly, You want the tabs of the connector pointing up at the butt shaped end of the crimping tool.

Each slot is also stepped, the two sets of crimp tabs on the connector straddle this step. The end that the wire coating gets crimped into is the taller side and the raw wire end goes in the short side.

It took me a while to discover this but my tool has a release which is very handy for when the connected gets misaligned that way you can release it and try again without having to finish the crimp, I wasted a number of connectors before I found this. the way this tool works is at a certain point it starts to ratchet down, so its seemed like there was a point of no return before I found this release tab.

Small rant, crimping with needle nose pliers is not crimping at all, all its doing is smashing things. These connections will work but wont hold up over time as they aren't able to hold onto the wire very well, most would fail a "tug test". If you must do it this way follow up and solder the wire to the connector so at least they hold together.

Oh for sure, if you use the needle nose like a hammer.

What I do is bend the ears over and crimp em both straight back down on the connector, just like fancy crimp tools do, works a treat mate

Sorry, call me a sceptic, but I need to see the actual results of you needle nose artistry.

Perhaps tomorrow I'll find the time meng. See, I Don't need you to see the actual results, it's a toy truck and I'm just happy sharing alternative methods that work for me with every other adult who finds it fun to play with said trucks

Humboldts closeups and directions are really spot on for that tool. Try with really good lighting and look real close at the connector as you crimp it nice and slow, make sure it doesn't twist or move around, if it starts to, flip the lever and back it out. Just takes time and patience, you'll get it.

Yeah. Thanks for all the help. But I tried. Not everyone is capable of everything. This in not mine. I will try again later. But I am running out of terminals... so it is what it is. I won't run of solder, and I am good at soldering.

well, I ended up doing it... BUT...... I still hate it.....

and since I shortened the OEM wires from the battery, they no longer reach my ESC..... So now I need an extension harness, or new batteries..... ugh...

I am getting some male and female ends delivered tomorrow, and luckily have a few more terminals, I will make myself an extension harness....

but man, this is a pain......

seriously done with these....
