Default How's your Worm doing?

Happy Holidays to all!

Id like to learn more about the SCX worm gear. I am trying to understand how it works.

Is it supposed to have so much play inside the axle housing? Mine seems to float a couple MM front to back depending on if Im on the gas to reversing.

Ive read some threads here that suggest there are two shims or rubber o rings on each side of the worm gear. I have a total of three SCX axles and none of them had any shim or rubber o ring on them.

And Ive had one axle failure that appears to have been fixed by swamping one worm from another axle (I did 4WS so I have a spare rear axle) into the frozen one. The frozen one would take double taps to change from forward to reverse. Appears the worm would catch on the gear or something. Swaping it out fixed it.

But should the worm move back and forth to the changing of my forward or reverse direction?

In a worm gear setup the worm gear has to be allowed to move laterally for it to work otherwise it would bind up way too easy.

There should be no play in a worm driven axle.
