If I use a pinion with a grub screw do I want to make a flat spot on the shaft of the surpass motor? Thanks in advance

I always do.
It does not need to be big at all. Just a small flat spot where the grub will hit.
This way you do not need to crank down the grub super tight to keep the pinion from spinning on the shaft.
