A little too thin there eh? Were you using a file and drill press? |

Using the lathe... I wasn't thinking and cut it backlwards in a sense. I chucked up the small end on the shaft side first, and machined the rest of the body down. When it came time to finish the end of it, I flipped it around and was having issues getting it to center in the jaws. I thought I had it, but apparently it was still off center enough to jump once it hit the bit :-p I am going to turn down another tomorrow for him, just thought I would share the picture of my mistake :-D |

Must be the compression artifacts on the jpg, I see waves in the cut like a bastard file would leave. I generally hold where the cap goes and cut them down to the skinny part. I just leave a rib on top (where the jaws sit) to hold the spring, just like you did. |

The shocks do have some waves in them, I wasn't sure if it was from a dull bit or just the low grade aluminum used. I will sand them smooth and give them a little polish |

Looks like some chatter. Either a dull bit, flex somwhere, or you had the bit off center.

Nobody at the shop ever takes care of the poor old lathe, I am sure the bit was dull. And the bit was off center when I first set it up, as we just had to repair a couple bolts for the tool holder. I had to tear down part of the lathe, and gave it a good cleaning while I was at it. I'll have to see if we have some new cutting tips for it tomorrow.

Just don't jack it up too high! Nicklepimp's not bringing in the funds as good as he was over winter. He must be wearing more revealing clothing with the warmer weather |
