Default Locked Up's 6x6 reBuild - HexaMAN

I dub the... HexaMAN ...

March 2012 - Body built by Dirty/Reptile666? (external link)
December 2012 - Cab cage/tube, rear bed, SCX10 frame and axles added by jzz6
... ???
January 2015 - Dropped off on my doorstep and the rebuild began.

Day one was somewhat mixed.
The cab was heavily damaged during shipping so my excitement was a bit overwhelmed by disappointment, but repairs are in the works.

Damage aside, I pretty much fell in love with this once I got all the packing peanuts cleaned off.
Because of the damage the wheels in my head started turning and I have some changes planned for this truck.

The weight of the truck was 10 lbs 6.8oz when I first weighed it.
That was a roller with zero electronics, plastic wheels, etc.
The bed itself was over 2 lbs including the spare tire, carrier and rocket/box.

I'm planning on:
FI Spools
OD/UD gears
OT shafts
VP VVDs
replace the CMS setup
Bead lock wheels
Possibly custom bead lock rings
45-55t turn hand wound
Servo winch
HD trans outputs
Metal trans gears
300+ servo
BEC
BR Mini

I also want to:
Move the transmission forward
Get more rear drive shaft
Shorten the wheelbase front to mid (and front to rear).
Put more weight on the mid axle (possibly no springs on rear axle)
Lower the cab and bed
Improve bed and cab mounts
Mount cage to frame to remove stress on cab
Strip, repair and repaint body
Revamp interior
Raise sliders
Add scale detail (hardware, hubs)
Wire LEDs front, rear and top

More to come soon...

So here you can see the starting wheelbases are right at 12" and 17.25"

Front tire location

Rear tire locations

Messing around

Rear bumper mounted right to the bed

The bed mounts are actually a pretty cool hinge and pin setup. Hard to explain but works well enough.

Spacing around sliders

Something sits off a hair:

Body mounts need work. I hope to get cage directly to frame then secure cab inside cage

Tracbar bracket is loose

cracked skid plate

Rear upper links mounted at 90* in the front which caused a hair of bind

Large chunk of plastic out back

Finally got rid of that extra axle so it's a 4x4 now.

Kidding!

Front servo mount looks like a stock servo plate
TLT bracket for the trackbar?
Plates to lower shocks down

More to come soon.

The expressions on their bodies made me literally LOL !

In my mind, they were both telepathically saying "duuuuuuuude, WTF"??

Was reading the previous thread on this last night. Was going to comment that I thought it looked cool busted like that, just needed some rust. Then again, if I had paid for it, I'd be bummed too.

I want the cab and cage to be separate pieces but I'm not sure exactly how I'm going to mount the cage....

I do know how I want to mount the cab though.... So I trimmed out a few pieces and removed some of the paint to prep for bonding to bulk up those areas.

The bed is also an adventure!
Something was not square internally and yeah, I'm anal enough to want it visibly perfect.

So I cut down some of the internal support to lower it and still allow it to sit above the rails a bit. That way I can line it up with the chassis and not have to worry about the non squared fiberglass. Some foam will cover that once all is said and done but no great pics of that as it's ongoing.

The bigger and more noticeable changes to the bed are that I cut out some of the wheel well and shortened it by 1.5" to better match the new 10.75" / 16.00" wheelbases.
I still need to trim the metal on top, then I will follow up with some repairs to the fiberglass.

With the bumper in place it will mount directly to the frame and still give a great departure angle.

Updates!

This is the first time since 1990 that I have worked with fiberglass, so ... lookout!

Prep of the areas with sand paper and dremel sanding cylinders was first. I started to see some of the previous colors and I think when the green gets scratched it might look a bit like rust. So that may make for some neat trail scars.

Once I was happy with that and had everything lined up the way I wanted, I used some HVAC tape to hold it all together. If you have never used this stuff it is great for adding rigidity to things like this.

I'll admit I did not get all the previous paint off, but the inside was actually pretty textured, so I think it will hold up just fine.

If you have never worked with fiberglass don't be intimidated. I used some small art brushes to help me apply the resin and lay the pieces down. I will say that if you are going to do something like this, make sure you cut all your strips ahead of time. I only cut a few and by the time I was finishing up the resign was getting hard.

I ended up laying about 4 strips in the center and 2 up each side. I probably could have just cut single big pieces but the small ones were pretty easy to manipulate and not get mess everywhere. I did use to much resign though so I'll probably go back and sand some out. That should be a ton of fun...

I also have these for a future update ...

LURC MAZ Prototype wheels:

When they are ready, you'll know!

They are prototypes for a production set we are working on and will eventually be available on lockeduprc.com

Yep. The bed is glass so I figured I might as well.
Next step is to fill the seams on the exterior.

Those are 1.9s. Everything for this truck is 1.9 already so it just fits better that way.

I'm not sure how many people would be interested in a 2.2 but if there is interest we can certainly look into doing a run.

Getting sidetracked from the 6x6 build but I kinda think the opposite for 2.2. Maybe I am biased cause I build alot of big 2.2 trucks. Lol The rc4wd 2.2 militants are too time consuming to assemble and really only the 2.2 military option out there besides custom jobbies.

They look molded to me.

I'm going to need about 9 of those for my maz-537 in a few months.

I would go for at least 8 2.2 rims. Im also working on a Maz 537.
What offset are they? Maz 537 is realy wide in 1:10.

Thanks!

Machined.
Some parts are black oxide finished steel, some are anodized aluminum.

That is my favorite feature.... they can be whatever offset and width you want them to be.

That will make more sense when they get fully unveiled.
