8x8 bullhead oilfield flatbed build 6 Attachment(s) been collecting parts and building this up for over a year now. basic idea was to build something similar to the 8 wheel oil field trucks. something like this, with some liberties taken of course. Attachment 307487 i seem to have lost a few photos so jump ahead to the first version of the frame. Attachment 307488 frame is hand made from different aluminum sections. the axles are Tamiya Cr-01 modified for pass thru. tires are temp, the wheels are rc4wd russian military URAL 1.9s. transmission is a tamiya hi lift 3 speed, which i have divorced the t-case from. first mock up. body is not going to stay like that though. Attachment 307489 got the transmission and transfer case mounted. unfortunately, i misjudged some dimensions. the axles are too close to the t-case outputs. I couldnt make a driveshaft that short that still could stay together at max flex. front shocks are from a vaterra ascender, rear shocks are CR-01 hop ups, but they are temporary, they are just to large diameter. also got the new rubber onto the rims, rc4wd 1.9 gladiators. Attachment 307490 Attachment 307491 so i built a longer frame. old one is on top. Attachment 307492 put the drive train back in, built mount for the shift servo and got the drive shafts cut and fitted. also started hacking the body. Attachment 307493 Attachment 307494 Attachment 307495 |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build 6 Attachment(s) so on to the body mods. unfortunately, either I'm missing some photos, or just forgot to take them. i cut off the side steps and the back deck of the bullhead body. i patched up the back, and then built the flat fenders for the second set of front tires. I filled the sunroof and the body post holes in the fenders. i also opened up the front fenders a bit more as i have some nice SDI flares i will be using. Attachment 307496 Attachment 307497 Attachment 307498 Attachment 307500 Attachment 307499 quick mock up with the flares. Attachment 307501 |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build Cool project! What motor are you going to use? |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build I'm using a tazer 4 pole 2800 kv. |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build Very nice work! looking forward to more updates. |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build 8 Attachment(s) well, where did i get to? i mounted up the motor and electronics and gave it a quick test drive. this is a bit out of order i think, as the shift servo wasn't in yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJy9SAgy7k4 i found that it was bit fast for my liking, but because of the way the 3 speed is built, i couldn't gear it down. the motor was hitting the casing so i couldn't put in a smaller pinion in. so i put in an HPI GRU, but to keep it from having a snails pace i used a large pinion. Attachment 307810 This need some rethinking though... 1st gear is awesome, but 3rd is only barely walking pace and 2nd is so close to 3rd i never use it. i made up front bumper, and installed some body posts on the frame, and off the shock towers. got the body mounted. While i was at it i extended the inner fenders with some styrene. Attachment 307811 Attachment 307812 Attachment 307813 Attachment 307814 Attachment 307815 Attachment 307816 got the basic electronics mounted up. -tazer 1/10 waterproof esc with 2800kv 4 pole brushless -spektrum sr410 in traxxas case. -20 amp adjustable Turnigy bec (plasti-dipped) to power the 4 steering servos. -shift servo is a HPI 50-wp 12 kg, waterproof. -steering servos are hobby king waterproof 12.8 kg metal gear servos. at 8 bucks each, i thought why not give them a shot. they have held up so far and they have even been underwater. still probably gonna do a little extra waterproofing on them to be safe. lights, winches come later. Attachment 307817 |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build 7 Attachment(s) i built a rear bumper for it and a transfer case skid. Attachment 307819 Attachment 307820 Attachment 307821 then i decided i had to drive it, so i threw on the trim and took it out. Attachment 307822 Attachment 307823 Attachment 307824 Attachment 307825 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Awvwz...ature=youtu.be wasn't sure i would make it thru that river of slush. did pretty well overall that day and nothing broke. I'm currently building the rear deck, so this build is now caught up more or less. |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build 10 Attachment(s) so like the rest of this build, i used some aluminum angle and channel to frame up the deck. I have some basswood i will be using for the decking. Attachment 308217 the deck is mounted with 1"x1" angles using a piece of aluminum tube as a hinge. this is to allow easy access to the battery under the deck. Attachment 308218 Attachment 308219 Attachment 308220 Attachment 308221 I mounted up the bullhead's fuel tanks. Attachment 308222 Attachment 308223 Attachment 308224 the rear mount is held in with cotter pins, the front mount has 1 cotter pin and 1 body clip for easy removal. Attachment 308225 Attachment 308226 |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build 6 Attachment(s) cut strips of the basswood on my band saw and the mounted them to the frame. Attachment 308227 Attachment 308228 Attachment 308229 Attachment 308230 Attachment 308231 Attachment 308242 |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build While i still have winches, lights, grill guard, and headache rack to make, i have been considering paint. Im kinda torn right now. Options are keep the chrome trim and do the body bright yellow with semi gloss black frame and trim, or a matte paint finish (black or green probably) with all the chrome re painted a dull aluminum or steel kinda grey. thoughts? suggestions? |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build I vote to avoid the usual military look and go black yellow! Now im going to go on facebook and yell at you for not posting an updated pic on ST-RC, or the link to your thread |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build I plead for leniency o great street terror :flipoff: Anyways, yeah i kinda wanted to stay away from military too. I was thinking i would rust is up a bit and make it kinda ex military or maybe a bit mad max-ish |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build 3 Attachment(s) Added some shackles for tie downs and recovery points. Attachment 309050 Attachment 309051 Attachment 309052 |

Re: 8x8 bullhead build wow, this thing is turning out awesome |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build 8 Attachment(s) Thanks Szczerba! so i started building the headache rack/ rear winch mount. i use brassand a small soldering torch. no brazing equipment for me here . It works though and holds up well enough. Attachment 310515 Attachment 310516 Attachment 310517 Attachment 310518 Attachment 310519 Attachment 310520 oops, skipped a few steps here. Attachment 310521 and here is where the rear servo winch will mount. Attachment 310522 Attachment 310523 |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build 8 Attachment(s) I attached the frame saddles i made earlier and mounted it up to the frame. Attachment 310524 Attachment 310525 Attachment 310526 Attachment 310527 Attachment 310528 i used 4mm bolts with a locknut in the frame to attache it. i got a little clever here cause this headache rack is only half the job. there will also be the front grill guard which will connect to the rack with some brush rails. this means the rack, grill guard and cage need to come off for the body to be removed. so, I wanted this to be as easy as possible. 2 4mm bolts front and 2 back and i didn't want to have to mess with the locknut on the inside of the frame. enter 2 part epoxy. I made a little form inside the frame, set the nut in place and covered the bolt with a bit of aluminum pipe and cast the whole thing in place with epoxy. seems to be working just fine. Attachment 310532 Attachment 310531 i also swapped in the proper shocks i am using on the rear. i used an rc4wd spring assortment to give the rear end some extra payload. i can now carry my ~8kg full metal option tiagen tiger tank without maxing out the suspension. i use the hardest and the second hardest springs to give me a bit of dual spring rate so i still have some suspension flex. Attachment 310533 |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build 3 Attachment(s) I took it out for a run on sunday. here are some photos and a video of the day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXve5I2TlcE Attachment 310534 Attachment 310535 Attachment 310536 |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build Mannnn a C500! Why didn't I think of this haha I started collecting a few things for a 6x6 build but I think this is the new direction, this thing is sick |
Re: 8x8 bullhead build Yup. c500s were a main inspiration for it. |
