Ar60 6x6 wood hauler

Was too excited to start building that I forgot to start a thread so I'll catch you guys up to date. I started with an special edition extended Exile RC proscaler frame and 3 sets of ar60s. I wanted to do something a little different so I mocked up a cantilever system for the rear end and spend a lot of time getting the pinion angle and link lengths right.

I could document everything I've done so far but it would take all night, I'll let the photos do the talking.

Wow that's a crazy suspension setup !
How does it works ?

Here's a link to a video during the build stage. I'm going to have a lot of setup time once the chassis is fully loaded to get the dampening and ride height to where I want it.

Got a good start on the dash tonight. It's not perfect but looking into the cab it will look close enough!

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...9471d4da1c.jpg

Finished "seasoning" some more wood and glued it in place. Still need to harvest a bit more to fill it out to the stake sides.

Hoping to get some sunshine this weekend so I can get started on the painting process. If not I guess I'll get some plastic sheeting and a respirator!

Added some stain to the bed and I'm in the process of painting the cab.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...d35a4f0d96.jpg

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...7097c8fa62.jpg
Started with a base coat of silver and sprinkled a bit of salt in the rusted area

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...b0fe66a2b7.jpg
Next comes the copper coat and a bit more salt for good measure.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...35d8131a9f.jpg

And here's where I'm at now, a coat of white. It's a little chilly outside and it has effected the paint more than expected so I've got a couple runs. I plan on doing some wet sanding anyways so this won't be an issue. Just have to wait until it cures so I can mask it off for the red coat.

Well I've masked the body and hit it with a coat of red. Not sure how I did this before tamiya masking tape, that stuff is worth its weight in gold! http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...1a381d3744.jpg

Can't wait to peel the tape!!

I'm in awe over those pieces of wood. I know that is silly... but dang they look real!

The wood is actually what started the idea of the stake side bed. I was cleaning up some brush at my mom's house and thought it looked like roughly the right diameter to be firewood. Cheapest scale accessory I've ever made!

Yup!! Wet sanding is done too, got a little carried away in a few spots but it's an easy fix.

Before wet sanding

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...901d8ed9e5.jpg

After wet sanding

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...d7a86fdb05.jpg

Just rinsed it off and I'm eagerly waiting for it to dry so I can hit it with a final coat of flat clear.

Re: Ar60 6x6 wood hauler

I had the bright idea of not masking the inside of the windows for over spray so I spend a good half an hour with the wife's mail polish remover. I made up for that foolish mistake by applying the decals before the flat clear, gives a way more even finish to the truck.

Thanks for the offer, I'm definitely considering going with the k02's but I'd rather get a pair of growlers. Definitely need another set of gmade wheels to match though. I'll let ya know!

Here's some more progress. First off to stay within the theme of a bush truck I figured a bush fix was in order.

I used a servo grommit (I think that's what it's called?) So the antenna can easily be removed if need be.

The log pile is finally done, its filled out as much as I want to go, just need to figure out how to attach it...
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...c0927bd7ee.jpg

Also mounted the dash to the body. Since its so close to the bumper I decided to mount it to the body instead of the chassis to avoid battery change issues.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...7b51360d8d.jpg

Tomorrow's project is headlight and turn signal buckets.

Very interesting on the rear shock set up .Has it been tested and was wondering what the benefit of having the shocks like that...
The reason i ask :ror: I'm building a 6x6 also and may change or try a cantilever set up..."thumbsup"..
I like salt technique...

There are a few benefits with a cantilever shock setup, Lack of shock towers is nice if you want to have a flat deck. Ride height is easily adjustable and spring rate can indirectly be changed by adjusting the pivot on the cantilever.

In my application there really isn't much of an advantage because my cantilevers are so long and at max compression they are almost the same height as shock towers would be. I mainly just wanted to try something different and if it doesn't work ill go back to the drawing board and try something different. The frame I'm using is extremely versatile and can accomodate almost anything you can think up.

Re: Ar60 6x6 wood hauler

It's f'n cold in the shop so I've been concentrating on some detail work that I can do in the living room. So far I've added a bench seat and also added some axial interior detail pieces that I had lying around.

I had some foam lying around at work so I snagged it and cut the rough shape of a bench seat out with the help of a bread knife (worked surprisingly well)
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...be05711acf.jpg

A while back I raided my mom's basement and found an old jacket and I've been using it for seat fabric ever since! Kinda suits the age of the truck.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...38b5edfc4b.jpg

Here's how she's sitting now, once the shop warms up a bit I'll fire up the airbrush and get started on some interior paint. Now all I need is a driver.....

Isn't great where you can utilize parts or stuff lying around the house..
I used aluminum window frames for my battery tray.
I like hounds tooth seat cover......

Re: Ar60 6x6 wood hauler

Got the lights wired up and interior painted. Also had some time to work on the "payload".

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...0f0fb4052c.jpg

I like keeping wiring nice and clean so I've got one main power connector for all the lighting with spots to add later if I add more.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e322d7681b.jpg

Had a bunch of extra foam so I added a "cooler" for the hollow log pile. I think I'll be the most popular guy on the trail!

Re: Ar60 6x6 wood hauler

Well my electronics showed up today from Amazon, just like almost all my other rigs I went with a castle sidewinder 3 and a CCBec. Motor wise I went through the old parts bin and found an old Axial 55T that should do the trick. I don't imagine ill be doing any rock bouncing with this thing and on 3s the 55T should be good enough.

Recently I got my hands on a Vanquish Hurst DIG that I think will really help with this trucks (I assume) horrible turning radius. The price was right and why not.

Now that I've got the truck all wired up and ready to go I gave it a quick drive around the shop. To my disappointment it's completely undriveable, the front end is binding at the axles and at full droop the front driveshaft is binding a little bit. Back to the drawing board, going to be in the market for a ar60 panhard adapter for sure.

Note to self: Complete the chassis before starting on the extensive body work!

Thanks for the offer but I've got a pretty good idea of what needs to happen, I just tend to throw things together and see how they work instead of planning it out. Flying by the seat of my pants!

First step is I'm gonna move the skid plate backwards to help with the driveshaft angle and get a set of cvd's for the front. One big advantage to this proscaler frame is the amount of mounting points it has offers a lot of flexibility.

In the back of my head I knew that I needed a panhard kit for the front but I was in denial. I think it's gonna have to wait till after Christmas though, they're more expensive than I thought!

I know I got it from HobbyKing a while back, I think it was in the servo accessories section. One of those things you buy to fill your cart without going over the weight threshold for cheap shipping. [emoji12] If I can find it again I'll post up the link for you.

Re: Ar60 6x6 wood hauler

Considering how hand made the rest of this build is I decided to try and build my own panhard mount. In my mind I think it will be strong enough but only time will tell. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...f25fc7920a.jpg

I admit I cut a little too much off the chassis mount but who knows it may last. Half the fun is seeing what you can get away with! Although I'm not sure I want to carry this one out if it breaks...
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...3aa723cd16.jpg

After the front end was adjusted I was able to finally drive it around the shop. For having a 19in wheelbase it actually drives pretty well! I've had these axles sitting around for so long that I forgot there's an overdrive gear set in the front so combine that with the dig and she might have a half decent turning circle (all things considered).

Tomorrow's project is permanently mounting the electronics and gearing down the pinion.

Re: Ar60 6x6 wood hauler

While out Christmas shopping today I picked up some of the final parts I need to finish up this project. I got a set of gmade wheels and another pair of pitbulls growlers. They aren't the same wheels as the rear but I kind of wanted them to be a bit different. Love the scale hardware they are using now, I only wish they were a bit wider.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...bf6c40e549.jpg

I also came across a driver... Unfortunately Clay's legs don't move so they had to be amputated but for $10 I can't complain. Also picked him up a furry friend so has a companion to walk home with when his Ford breaks down [emoji23]

Re: Ar60 6x6 wood hauler

Been a while since I've updated this build. I'm currently waiting on some parts for the rear cantilever suspension. As it stands I've got the levers pivoting on a bolt with plastic washers to allow movement. During the building stage this has been great but really won't last, as they wear it will just create play in the arms and that's not ideal. A few weeks ago I ordered a bunch of 3mm thrust washers off eBay to take care of this issue. Once these show up I'll be able to properly tune the rear and hopefully get it on the trail!

patman_and_robin 01-01-2017 02:43 PM

Re: Ar60 6x6 wood hauler

Forgot to mention I added another brace and some fog lights to the bumper to fill it in. The exchange rate is killing me! Paid $33 for an axial light bucket kit. Last one I bought was around $23.

Still waiting on the slow boat from China for that hardware so I've been working on some finishing touches.

I spent some time on the rear bumper. Drilled some holes and added some mesh for the brake lights. I eventually plan to use an old servo to run some reverse lights as well. The aluminum also polished up nicely!

My m3 thrust bearings showed up! I originally ordered these months ago and the first shipment never showed up. Now that I've got them installed I'm very happy with how smooth the cantilever suspension is working. Now I can play with the springs and make some bump stops to help with the tires rubbing on the bed.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...dde84b026c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a24d1d7087.jpg
