Unimog 6x6 full custom Hi This it's my project for Unimog 6x6. real 1/10 except the wheelbase. I don't want it to be too big. I want it be detailed but there's no "WOW" specs. SCX10 axles, ebay tires, Junfac beadlocks. 45t motor... To start: steel frame rails http://static-b.lusorc.com/resize/aH...cxLmpwZw==.jpg First parts to arrive http://static-b.lusorc.com/resize/aH...1hLmpwZw==.jpg http://static-b.lusorc.com/resize/aH...IyY3ouanBn.jpg Don't mind the wheels http://static-b.lusorc.com/resize/aH...ZwLmpwZw==.jpg The body, build from styrene. It's my first scratchbuilt body so it's not perfect http://i57.tinypic.com/2a0dkw1.jpg http://i57.tinypic.com/sook6r.jpg http://i57.tinypic.com/250ibup.jpg http://i58.tinypic.com/5tz18o.jpg http://i58.tinypic.com/2a6ovah.jpg http://i61.tinypic.com/doop6h.jpg http://i57.tinypic.com/zums8i.jpg http://i61.tinypic.com/2111452.jpg |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals Side vent done: http://i59.tinypic.com/2r5yz2o.jpg The hatch was too tall, machined it a bit. Windshield done http://i62.tinypic.com/20sf678.jpg The fenders in place, made from water pipe http://i62.tinypic.com/28lz1x1.jpg Unfinished bumper http://i60.tinypic.com/28rmq1l.jpg |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals For your first scratch build, it looks really good. Keep up the awesome work. Sent from my HTC Desire 626 using Tapatalk |

Thank you! Yes, it was my first full-on scratchbuild. Very time consuming but fun It's getting there: http://i58.tinypic.com/ibb2tf.jpg http://i61.tinypic.com/28rh348.jpg Shock mounts welded in place http://i57.tinypic.com/2cqinpt.jpg http://i62.tinypic.com/2qnzfpk.jpg Still waiting for the gearbox to see if this layout works http://i60.tinypic.com/517atl.jpg http://i58.tinypic.com/fa2czk.jpg |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals Sweet build! I'm also going to be starting a 6x6 build, so I'll definitely be following closely. Could you get a better pic of how the last axle links mount? Are they on the frame or attached to the middle axle? |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals Quote:
The rear axles are both 4-link. The mount for the 3rd axle's links it's not very scale but was the better solution I came up at the time. I'm making a brand new chassis right because of the portals. More to come. Feel free to ask anything http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psfxlhaigp.jpg http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psncrotesc.jpg http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...pssq6jburp.jpg |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals Worked on the rear section: http://static-b.lusorc.com/resize/aH...c4LmpwZw==.jpg http://static-b.lusorc.com/resize/aH...FsLmpwZw==.jpg http://static-b.lusorc.com/resize/aH...FsLmpwZw==.jpg http://static-b.lusorc.com/resize/aH...FjZ20uanBn.jpg After 2 coats of mate clear mate, it does not shine Now it's time for the steering. It was my first try with a "servo on chassis" setup. Thankfully, The-Gamer beared with me all the way and gave the tips to make this work. It's all temporary for now. I'll make a proper axle mount for the new axle and the panhard will be more scale. The rod was only to define lenght http://i61.tinypic.com/24yw8qa.jpg http://i61.tinypic.com/2m7snee.jpg http://i60.tinypic.com/15343gl.jpg |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals I see what you're saying about not being scale. They look like they would work though. That's a shame about making a new frame, this one looks really tough! |

Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals One of the things I've been anxious to do were the side mirrors. The cab seems "naked" without them. Here's the first finished one: http://i62.tinypic.com/wvtye0.jpg http://i60.tinypic.com/2w6h1jc.jpg http://i61.tinypic.com/20utt0k.jpg Well, this is the 2th mirror in place http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psrjwekbin.jpg Both mirrors are adjustable in height, rotation and mount folds if needed Another thing I've finish was the functional hatch. The hatch was there from the start but I had trouble figuring out out to make the mecanism to open. Nothing fancy but it works http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psiyemnxr0.jpg http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psbunym9mi.jpg Finally I can paint in the final color http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psvuuacwu8.jpg Mirror in the final position http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psgemsszwg.jpg |

Next thing is do the windows Are you liking until now? |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals No reactions??? hmmmm....I think I have to step up my game... So, took 2 gears and pieces of aluminium http://static-image.lusorc.com/aHR0c...llLmpwZw==.jpg http://static-image.lusorc.com/aHR0c...BkLmpwZw==.jpg http://static-image.lusorc.com/aHR0c...hzLmpwZw==.jpg http://static-image.lusorc.com/aHR0c...M1LmpwZw==.jpg seems to work http://static-image.lusorc.com/aHR0c...NpLmpwZw==.jpg |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals Looks like somebody is a machinist. Really like the work on the portals. Sent from my HTC Desire 626 using Tapatalk |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals Great work. Very nice scratch build. I was definitely curious when the portals were going to make an appearance, excellent parts and styrene work. |

Talking about portals, my first idea was machining them but after making the prototype, knew that with the shop's milling machine, my portals will be crude looking and very time consuming. With the dimensions of the prototype and with a friend who does 3d modeling for a living, started to make something better looking to 3d print Came up with this, V1: http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...pshcrhk0ls.png After some trial and error with tolerances and plastic contraction, we had a functional portal http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psgbezj6gi.jpg Mounted on the SCX10 axle. If you look closely, you can see that's something different on the axle http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2kin9gko.jpg Because the portals add +9mm each side, I narrowed the axle 20mm and put those spherical ends |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals I am following, just haven't spoken up. I dont have a 6x6 but intend to build one at some point. The body work and end result are awesome! Well done! Its looking great! I am sure you sure please too. |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals WOW for a first scratch build your rig is looking sweet!! Sub'd |

Thanks guys! I expected to be a quick build but I keep adding stuff to do...the portals weren't in the original plan, for example Speaking of portals, these are the axle shafts for the front axle. Scratchbuilt for previous project, held great and didn't hurt me to narrow them to match the new axle width http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psmt0uqsvz.jpg Also had to make the both rear axles' shafts. Better than cut stock ones. These are straight and easy to do. 6mm steel rod with some fabrication.Nothing fancy http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...ps95t8au30.jpg http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psit8ollu7.jpg If you mount a stock shaft vs a new stub axle, can see that the width it's the same due to the design of the parts that replace the rear lockouts http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...pslse5iqba.jpg |
Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals Nice rig and details. Good job on the portals as well. |
