| Don't you know I'm Loco?
I've gone and done it. Not satisfied with creating half-tracked Land Cruisers, I've gone off the deep end with this build. With much thanks to Kenny Hauk of Hauk Designs for some excellent reference photos and permission, I'm building a tribute to the Loco Hauk: And, because I'm a glutton for punishment and failure, like the real 6x6, mine will also be powered by steam. "WHAT?!" You scream? "It'll never work, give up now", you say. Well, no. I like challenges. Fun stuff to come. Gathering parts now. Starting with an Axial SCX10 JK. It'll be interesting to read, my curiosity will keep me watching this build as I have a 1/20 scale live steam engine, and I have seen videos on YouTube of another RC steam car. |

I'd be curios too see how it works also, is there away to have a reverse gear or would it forward only There are a few Steam powered RC's video's but they don't have a lot of detail or explanation Last edited by kgb424; 07-27-2017 at 01:05 AM. |

I really like to see a steam punk style rat rod crawler that would just chug along.

All Axial driveline again. Going to stay true to that mantra as I want to drive it at AF2018. No real progress to show, but I found the donor JK from which to build. There's a couple nice parts on here I'd like to try and use, but truth be told, it's mostly just the frame rails and one of the axles that'll survive. Also, sourced New Bright body to destroy. Now, to braze the new chassis rails together, or just "join" them?

Very good sir. Another daunting task you have assigned yourself. I approve. Oh, and no functional scale steam whistle equals not scale. Last edited by chino63; 07-30-2017 at 09:16 PM. |

So after some noodling and measuring, I determined that the best way to approach making the frame longer was to make it longer. I added some length from another set of rails I had sitting around, and some drop mounts for the top links. Same height and width that they would be if mounting to the original skid. Another look at the mounts. I made up my own links the only way I know how, with 8/32 all-thread and brake line. Brazing is fun too. GCM transfer case for transferring cases. Nice straight drivelines, all the way to the third axle. The idea here, was to make sure I had a lot of reduction from the outdrive of the steam plant so, using the trusty GCM front motor mount for the Axial transmission should give me plenty of oomph. Rather than use a spur, the outdrive will connect straight to the shaft. Currie F9's from Vanquish look super badass and allow for the flip required for the third axle - so yay. The whole chassis as it sits, I think this photo was before I sorted out the rear shocks (I need a flat skid to mount the boiler to). A bunch of bits fell off the New Bright body. And as it sits after a few more cuts an extensions. More to come.

If your still trying to figure out the rear suspension to keep the flat skid I may have an idea for you. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk |

It's being built. Quote:
Some progress has been made, but I'm still waiting on the steam unit. There's not a single word from the US distributor, but I'm hoping that it's being made. With that in mind, I can't do a ton of work but I have made some progress. I cut the roof down to size to make it fit. It required some additional contouring on the back part as the body tapers slightly in the rear, and now it doesn't, because it's shorter. Fixed. Until I get the steam unit, I'm guessing on how much actual space I need for it, or what modifications I can make to it's stock layout, so, here's sort of what the rear will look like: The whole thing will be hidden under a faux boiler, like the actual truck, which is kind of a bummer, but all good. Leaves me room to hide a lot of the wizardry. Body ride height also sorted. Required a few additional cuts to the body, but allowed me to use the Vanquish running boards as body clips. I like. So New, much Bright.

| Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? Hope you can wait. There's a lot of stuff to figure out. WHAT. Oh yeah, I've got to order wheels still - but tires will match. Final payment made on expensive German hand-built steam engine and tracking number received. EEEK! It's happening for real now. |
