| AXE 550 motor upgrade for TRX6
Hi all. Just picked up a TRX6 in silver yesterday and thinking about future upgrades. I’m looking at the AXE 550 motor/esc combo. Wondering if I should get the 2700kv or 3300kv version? Will the 3300 be just as good for crawling, or would the 2700 be a better option? I am running 3S LiPo. Looking for more performance across the board. I understand the 2700 is a bit better than the stock motor with same gearing and the 3300 will be a bigger step-up. But obviously I don’t want to compromise crawling performance for more top end. Price is the same on both kits, so it’s not a cost decision. |

OK everyone is going to have a different opinion on this. You have people that believe a crawler should not go fast ever and you should buy a dedicated fast rc to satisfy that itch. You will have people that say going with a fast motor is fine and if that is what you want then go for it. So with that being said IMHO if you are going between the 2700 and 3300 Axe system go with the 3300. Both of those are honestly going to give you a lot of speed for a crawler in 2nd gear and maybe too much in first. The key here is to add in expo to your throttle on your transmitter. The Axe system does not allow for throttle curve adjustment so it must be done in your Tx. What this will do is decrease the sensitivity around neutral so that when you start to squeeze the throttle it will have a very slow smooth startup. If you want to pick up the pace squeeze that trigger to full and unleash the full range to the motor to haul ass. I find the stock 2200Kv Titan motor to offer plenty of speed in 1st for crawling and 2nd for ripping up a straight line. That 3300Kv will really make that rig go about 14MPH in 2nd gear. It comes with 11T pinion and I don't think you can get that much lower as once you go to 10 tooth the pinion is much longer and you may need to space the motor out. The TRX has great low gear ratio and there is not a lot of room to lower it further. That 2700Kv will get you about 7MPH in first and 11MPH in second. Here you will want to add in expo to your Tx if you want to have a slow smooth startup. I say go 3300Kv because you can make changes and adjustments to slow it down. Those are expensive systems and later on you may choose to move that to another rig and you know you'll have plenty of power for whatever it lives in next. OK those are just my thoughts and the way I look at it. **EDIT** One last adjustment you can make is with the Hobbywing App to adjust the settings. You can also set a percentage for forward as well as a different percentage for reverse. If you put in the 3300Kv system and it is still too fast for crawling you can set the forward from 100% to 75% or 50%. So you won't use the full power of that motor and make crawling better. By doing this, if needded, you will know that if you move that system to a new rig or decide you want your TRX to go faster all you need to do is change the settings instead of buying a new faster system. Going with a higher kv motor, and gearing down, gives you more torque, better throttle control, and a stronger drag brake. So order a smaller pinion to go with the new system, I don't have a trx so I can't make a recommendation. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk |

I finally ran my TRX6 in the yard for the first time today, and honestly surprised how fast it is with the stock motor in 2nd gear. I decided to go with the 2700kv AXE for a couple reasons, 1) it’s plenty fast stock and the 2700kv is even a bit faster according to reviews, and 2) none of the LHS near me have the 3300kv version in stock. My LHS just got in some 2700kv’s so I ordered one. I also ordered an 11t pinion, plus I understand the motor/esc kit will come with a 12t. So I have an option for more speed using the 12t if needed, but honestly I will probably stick with the 11t. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I think you’ll be happy with the 11, maybe even a 10 if possible, I haven’t looked at the gear setup enough but I’m running a snap on hauler with 2700kv and a 12t and it rips to fast, I’m scared to roll it haha

I just got the Gen 8 AXE system with the 5400 can. I can crawl so slow, I can roll and smoke a fat one before I go 10 feet. lol Ok, not quite that slow but close. the 550 cans should offer more power and more opened, but this axe system is exceptional for slow. the 550 will also offer that power and wheel speed. The 540 does pretty darn good. But top speed is a bit slow on the one speed Gen 8. I myself am looking at getting the 550 system, but it will go into the SSD/RC4WD Blazer I am building. And yes expo is a great thing. Sadly a Thing Traxxas Radios don't have from any that I ever seen/used. Last edited by Timmahh; 05-12-2020 at 08:53 PM. |
