Best to replace it; not advised to repair it, prob just as easy and safer to replace it; the book prob says you shouldn't shorten it and rc cars can be dangerous.

Range check:
Ariel down and walk 30 metres from the car, if it jitters or you have no control; you need to replace it.

Note: This is how we do our 2.4 and 35mhz plane/heli range checks in the UK.

This is on a crawler right? Most are just a few feet away when they're running, I would try what you said before replacing it, if it glitches then replace it....

I would hope that a runaway crawler wouldn't be dangerous

We all standing next to our crawlers when we crawl why worry about how long the antenna wire is, the antenna wire in my comp rig is only 8" long.

I've broke many antenna wires off. Instead of just twisting it together,it'd be better to actually solider it together, then shrink wrap. The antenna wires on all 3 of our rigs are only 2 1/2" long and work fine. 9 times out of 10,your dang near standing on top of your truck anyway. With a crawler,if you can get about 25-30 feet of range, your in pretty good shape. More range is better, but in most cases short range is all you'll need.

Yup, solder it, then cover with shrink tubing. Good as new!

It's really common in Discus Launch Gliders to cut the antenna, and put a small connnector in there. The antenna is run through the wing, so to take off the wing, you have to disconnect the antenna.

So yeah, solder and shrink it, and you'll be fine.
