Which Axial are you getting? My advice if you're getting the kits:
> Take your time building it. It's a fun, easy build and slow work is usually careful work. Just don't rush it.
> Hack off the fenders front and rear and slam the body.
> Run the travel limits inside the shocks (under the piston), not outside the shocks the way the instructions show.
> Cut the foams in a star shape and add about 4 to 6 oz. of stick-on lead weight to the front tires.

I really like the following upgrades:
> RCP aluminum knuckles
> MIP or Axial universals axles
> Losi, Panther or Pro-Line tires
> Axial upper link tray
> Axial servo/battery mount
> TCS Boomerang rear upper link mount

Save your foams and get some nice Memory Foams..

First things first. Buy nice Electronics. Castle ECS (Mamba Max or Sidewinder) Servo with over 200oz of Torque, and a Dx3R would be nice. Get a Nice handwound Brushed Motor. Then upgrade from there. Replace things as you go. Get a fill for your crawler and learn to drive it. You will better off that way.

The best advice I can give you is to use the search function on the forums and you will find a wealth of information (and also a wealth of B.S.sometimes).
