Default Novak 55t gearing problems

I have the Novak Rooster Crawler with the Novak 55t motor on 6 cells of Nimh geared 66/9 48p. Lots of torque but the guys with wheel speed are leaving me behind and I have to find alternate paths to climb up.

I wanted to change my gearing before I bought a new motor.

I swapped out for 96/28 32p that dropped my ratio from the old 7.4 to 3.4.

Can you guess what happened?

I didn't see it coming and I can't figure it out.

The truck had more wheel speed, but it wouldn't climb jack squat. A smooth, flat rock at a 45* angle and the truck wouldn't pull itself up. I went to change back after to the old gears after about 10 minutes and the motor, motor plate and pinion gear (once I got it off) were WAY too hot to even touch!

WTH?

There's something more going on here than I know.

What gearing can you suggest I run to get some more wheel speed but not gear it too tall for the motor?

Thanks !

another option is gear low and volt up, worked for me i have 8 cells 55t and geared 14/87 and love it.

I'm using the stock WK tranny.

With that ESC and motor combo you're not going to have both 'a lot of wheel speed' and 'a lot of torque'. I had something very similar, Novak Rooster Crawler and an Integy 55t. Since the Novak only allows up to 6 cells nihm/nicad or 2 cell lipo, you can't really volt up. I fixed my problem with a new motor. I got a 35t Warrior motor and kept the same gearing I had for torque with the 55t. It was a great improvment. I still had the climbing abilities and a bunch more wheel speed.

I put a 3s lipo in it for a little while yesterday and was getting crazy amounts of wheel speed out of it.

It's not something you'd want to do for very long as it's way more volts than the Rooster was meant for, but it did show me that the problem isn't really all based on wheel speed. I found that I still couldn't climb things that I should be able to. That I've seen others able to climb.

I need to change my focus to getting rid of the stock WK chassis and getting something that has a lower CG and doesn't high center so often.
