Default Help me out

OK, since Christmas and winter are coming soon I have decided that i want to make a gecko 2 clod project. I don't just want to buy a clod i want to build one from the ground up. I am only 13 and don't have welding skills and power tools other than a drill and a grinder stuff like that but i do have the patients to build anything. I was just wondering what Parts like, diffs, and steering linkage, motors, wheels i should use for now since those are the biggest parts. I want to get the Gecko 2 chassis. I would really appriciate it if you guys could help me out, and give me some ideas. I am looking to spend $400-500 just from christmas and my b-day so i dont have the money for $350 chassis and what not. Thanks a lot guys.

I wish I had patients to build a project. I do however, have plenty of patience to do it myself...

No crawler comes as a complete kit, every crawler is a "custom build".

Read the thread:
HOW TO BUILD A CLODBUSTER CRAWLER

That will give you all the aswers you desire. If you want a gecko, its a great chassis, but no chassis comes with axles. If you want to buy an Axle kit, check out The Crawler Store or search Ebay. edit: or try The Clod Junkyard

You can fab your own steering links from the tech section on the homepage of this site. Many places you can buy steering links alone. Contact Kevin at The Crawler Store and see if he will sell you just the steering links and hardware from his NN or Stick kits, they both use the same steering links.

After that, just get the electronics!
go with at LEAST Hitec 645MGs. Get either the Novak Super Rooster (if you can find one) or the Tekin Rebel 2, which is still in production. They both rock.

You'll have to really dig to find everything you'll need to build a crawler for less than $600. If you fabricate your own chassis and links, you'll save upwards of $200 easy. Buy some used parts to save even more. Good Luck!

Heres what im gunna do. I'm going to buy a stick chassis from the crawler store. For christmas. So then with my b-day which is in Feb I'm going to buy the axles and ill have almost a complete truck because i will steal the shocks off my savage, and the wheels, and so on. I'll build it over the coarse of the winter.

55t lathes. DERRR! if you're setting it up for the "super" class, go with 8 or 9t pinions. If you're setting it up for 2.2, go with 10 or 11t pinions.

Are you sure you want a stick? its a "competition" chassis, so it sacrifices brute force and ruggedness for finesse and ultra light weight. if you want something tougher and a bit more "bashable" i'd reccomend the NN (what I run) or the Gecko, Vprime, or something similar.

Do you have a vid of your nn. I'm thinking of getting one of them instead because they have more to them than just a shaft for a chassis and there cheeper

Videos = Click the image to open in full size.

I used my digital camera to shoot the clips, and the files are too large to upload to rcpics.net. Apparently theres a 20mb limit... I'm going to the same spot tomorrow, so I'll shoot some more clips and post them tomorrow afternoon-ish.

A lathe is what the motor usually goes in, but disregard that.

yeah, you only need the motor, itself.

as for 4 wheel steering, no you don't NEED a 3 channel radio. the TQ3 is the cheapest 3channel radio I know of. channel one = front steering. channel 2 = throttle. channel 3 = rear steering.

if they're independent like this, you can "crab walk" (drive sideways). its very useful sometimes. Or, you could use a regular 2 channel radio and get one of these to split the steering channel: adjustable reversing Y harness but you won't be able to crab walk.

A normal Y harness just splits the signal to two servos from one channel. The rear channel, however, needs to be reversed. You can NOT just splice the wires backwards like wiring a motor in reverse, so you need a reversing y harness.

the little dial lets you set the center of the 2nd servo independently of the first, this is really helpful incase they aren't perfectly aligned.

I use a Hitec Optic6 radio, its a 6ch aircraft radio and i have the channels mixed so i can select crab walking, front only, rear only, or 4 wheel combined steering collectively or intependently and at adjustable levels.
