Default Radio shopping help

O.K. I am new to crawling, in fact I have not even purchased one yet but I will be picking up a used/upgraded Ax-10 this weekend (I hope). I have a cheap 2 ch Tx/Rx to get me through but eventually I would like to install a DIG.

First:
Without breaking the bank what would be a good 2.4Ghz tx that comes with a 3 pos switch or is easily convertable to a 3 pos switch for the DIG?

Next question:
I have a 7ch air tx for my helis; would it be worthwhile to just use that tx and learn how to drive a stick?

Many thanks in advance,
K

The best 3 position radio out there (for both crawling and every other aspect of RC) is the DX3R from Spektrum. The best price I've seen for this unit (including one Rx) is from www.thebarnfloor.com If you create an account and add the radio to your cart, the price is ~$260+~$10 for shipping. I use this radio for about 95% of my RCs.

I have an airtronics rds8000 I love the radio, 8ch so anything you add (4ws, winch, etc.) you should be all good, but you'll need to spend a few days getting used to a stick

Look for an older DX3 (not DX3.0) This is what I did. It has the 3 position 3rd channel you want and it won't break the bank either. Can probably be had for around $100 with a receiver.

buy cheap, buy twice!! Go on and get yourself a Futaba 4pk they are pricey but WELL worth the extra. Check tower hobbies they usually have like this 3 pay thing for the higher end stuff. As jeremy stated above the DX3R is a pretty good radio it just feels kinda cheap in your hands. Look on the for sale thread I think I saw one there earlier.

If you can fly a heli, you should be able to drive a crawler with sticks.
If there's something that your heli Tx can't do without a mod, get a DX6i and modify that. Much cheaper than a decent wheel Tx.

Have a look on the electronics forum here for things that can be done to mod a Tx.

Thanks for the feedback all.

I would love to have a 4pk but only if it comes with a sofa to sleep on because the wife would kill me!

I am going to look into the Dx3 and Dx3R but in the meantime I may just try out the sticks (just seems counter intuitive to me somehow). I also have the cheap 2ch that will at least get me out there as well.

What about the Nomdio React?

Colby,
what rx's are compatable with the DX3?
I may be interested if the price is right and I can find rxs.

I beleive you can use any Spektrum receiver with it. Could be wrong. The SR3000 receiver is a great one. Thats what I use

Futaba 3PK w/a Spektrum module. You can pick up a used 3PK for around a bill. Throw in a Spectrum module (comes with a rx for $100) and you're gold
3 Pos. third channel, plus the ability to run dual ESCs if you wish for around $200 bones.

Ko ProPo has the new EX-5UR 2.4ghz 3 channel pistol with 5 positions on the third channel. Retails around $189 & it comes with 2 receivers

4PKs are definetly THE radio, but they are pricey.
DX3Rs are nice, but if you are gonna pay retail ($350), might as well bite the bullet and go 4PK!

I have a DX3R & a 3PK w/spektrum, both killer radios for the job, but the 3PK was around $125 less.

I know that it's different in the US, but here in the UK most electric racers seem to use sticks. At our local club (1/10th buggy on grass and 1/12th carpet) I'm the only person using a wheel. The other 25+ members use sticks.

I got my KO EX-1UR 4 channel pistol grip for $254 after shipping from stormer hobbies. No mixing, but the 3rd and 4th channels are 5 position that can be used for just about anything. The receiver is super small too so it fits anywhere on a cramped crawler. Very easy to setup and adjust. The best part about KO is their customer service. You can ask Robert (the guy who owns KO Propo America) any tech ? you can think of and he's johnny on the spot with a response. Ive raced with their radios since the original mars came out and I've loved every one Ive had. Currently Im using mine on a LCC and running a 3racing winch and lights on my SCX-10.

I agree 100X
KO produces NICE high quality radios(IMO some of the best in racing). They have just became more "affordable" in the last few years. With 2.4ghz, multi pos. 3rd, & 2 TINY receivers for under 2 bills its a NO BRAINER for us crawler addicts.

Do you need a 3 position 3rd channel to operate a front dig?

You only need a 2 position 3rd channel radio for front dig. For front and rear dig dig you need 3 position.

Also new to crawling. Along the lines of the 3 ch radios does anyone know if the DX3S has a 3 position 3rd channel? And also looking at the DX6i does it have monitoring capability?

Thanks. That just means I'm down to the DX3R or the DX6i.
