well.. I am not too sure.. but I've seen some goes at 16" to 17.5"...
I also have the same problem figuring out the WB for my 2.2 clod based crawler..
Hopefully we get some answers from the crawling gurus..

I've seen ones as big as 20". It is a little to the bigger end of the norm but I doubt it will be a problem.

I got the stock clod tires now I am going to narrow them but I really want to run t-maxx size tires. If 18 is to long I got links to lower to 15in so if i want to run t-maxx tires should i put those links on?

The problem that I have experienced with a longer wheelbase is the truck is difficult to steer. Climbing may be a little better, but the aggrevation with steering (even with 4 wheel steer) made me quickly go down to 16 inches.

Speed Demon: From the rccrawler rules for the 2.2 class - vehicle wheelbase is a maximum 12.5 inches. Vehicle track width is a maximum 12.5 inches. Limited to 2.2 wheels or smaller....etc. Check out the complete rules here: http://www.rccrawler.com/rules.pdf

Basic guide line I fallow. 14"-16" with a clod or standard Maxx size wheel. 15.5"-17" with 40series wheels. This is just basic guideline and just my opinion. I also would NEVER build a crawler with an 18" WB unless I ran Kongs... I would never run Kongs.

16" +/- is a great all around wheelbase.

I just finished a clod with about an 18 inch wheel base (just under 18 inches), in preparation to run the new 7.3 inch tall Moab XL's. We'll see how it does at the Colorado Comp on the 13th........
