old hippy is on the right path. tires is easily 80% of your setup. if the tires dont hook up you'll never crawl anything. theres lots of things you can do without spending much $$ on the axial trucks. trim the skidplate and move the lower links inside the chassis plates. also, do the steering mod to the knuckles to gain extra turning radius. some bents links in the rear is a cheap hop up that really helps out. check out http://www.rccrawler.com/axialcompbuild.html for some other stuff to make the truck more comp worthy.

| Wheels you can live without for a while. It took me a good 4 months to spin the hexes on mine. Even then if you can't afford Mayhems, a used set of Berg rims will do ya fine. The ESC is another very good step. Crawling is all about control. The stock ESC doesn't offer much of that... Quote:
Tires are a huge deal. Its the first basic mod for anything with wheels. Do spend ALOT of time driving it. Getting to know your rig is the best thing you can do, period. A seasoned driver with an off-the-shelf crawler will beat a noob that never runs his fully upgraded, multi-thousand dollar shelf-queen rig all the time.

I'll throw my 2 cents in. I don't think the stock tires are that bad. I may be the only person ever to think that...... Soften the foams up, add some weight to the wheels and run them. IMO, the biggest thing is to lower the center of gravity. As mentioned previously, get the battery off the top. Saddle pack NiMh's, or a lipo, either mounted on the front axle. Then internally shorten the shocks so they are about 4 1/8" long fully extended. Then drive the crap out of it. |

I would spend my money on a high torque servo (atleast 200 0z.) and some Losi comp claw tires. If your running the 27t motor then gear down to around a 12t pinion.

A quality esc., TEKIN, MAMBA, SIDEWINDER or ROOSTER. The Tekin has the best drag break IMO.

some of the best mods you can do don't cost anything but time and a little work. move the batteries to the axle, inboard the links at the chassis, add weight in your tires. Then I would start with a Tekin FXR escmotor combo and some new tires, then upgrade the steering servo and steering linkage. Then I would 4 link the front and rear and replace the lower links with delrin ones. You do all that and you will have a very capable rig. Once oyu outgrow this setup its time to start shopping for a new chassis and a Dig and 3 ch. radio. |
