Default What motor??

I am fairly new to the crawler world and LOVE it.
I have several models but I like my AX10 the best.
I have a ARTR 90004 with slight mods and the axial 55t
I run the castle brushless esc but when I get the crawler into some situations when I want the motor to hold the truck, it won't
I have the drag set at 100%
I was looking at the Intagy 55t lath motor
Is this a good option??

you need to search the difference betweeen HOLD brake and DRAG brake, now with that said different springs and motors will react with that esc. A Holmes Hobbies Cobalt is unreal for wheelspeed and torque on as little as 6 cells(nimh). hope that helps.

Hill-hold brake is a function of specialist crawler ESCs.
Without this feature, you'll need to find a motor with more mechanical (brush drag) or magnetic (stronger magnets) resistance.

I use a Novak Goat system, which has an excellent hill-hold brake. From what I've read, specialist crawler motors have more mechanical resistance to rolling than lathe motors. Makes sense, as a motor designed to power a comm or tyre-trueing lathe doesn't need this feature.

I had a sidewinder/55t and the thing wouldn't hold at all. Went to a holmes 500 puller geared to the moon (93/9) and it will hold anywhere. Of course my fxr/45 will stand on its nose.

The sidewinder really has a crummy drag brake from what I've seen.

Tekin FXR is they way to go, the drag brake is so strong on my berg that it will almost flip over when I stop fast.

I installed the intagy 55t lathe today and it is better than the axial 55t
but I want more...
what would be a good motor for a mild tuned ax10 with a sidewinder esc, stock hammers with beadlock weights from ebay
and of course a novice ( 4 month) trigger man

Upgrading to any lathe/crawler motor should be better. Even with the cheap lathe motors you can install stronger brush springs to increase the mechanical drag in the motor. It probably still wont hold on a hill with the Sidewinder but it should perform better that the stock 55t.

A hand wound motor will have stronger magnets and stiffer brush springs/ better brushes. It will have more drag than the lathe with the stiffer springs.

The cobalt motor will give the most braking effect because of the powerful Cobalt magnets and large brush/comm area. Their is a reason these motors are so expensive.

Or buy a Tekin FXR motor/ESC combo and never worry about drag brakes being to weak.
