Which do you prefer Nitro or electric crawlers?

I'm new to crawling so i was wondering which would be a better model to buy nitro or elelctric?

BigB_117 07-22-2009 04:32 PM

They don't make nitro crawler's... a few people have build them from scratch but they don't work very well.

Electric is the way to go.

Rockcrawler 07-22-2009 04:32 PM

How many Nitro crawlers have you seen? "thumbsup"

Electric

Go electric! Hey when your climbing a hill just make the " VROOM VROOM " sound if that makes you feel better.:-P

I have seen two, they were both loud, both spewed gas all over the rocks, both had to have their engines rebuilt after just a couple of runs because of running them at near max RPM most of the time.

Your big choice for power plants is brushed or brushless; and NiMH or LIPO. "thumbsup"

I haven't rebuilt the engine once in 47 liters. Just must be lucky.

Thats a nice MadForce (Spirit chassis?), MadForce... but its not a rock crawler.

Stormin2u 07-22-2009 07:23 PM

You need torque for rock crawling something Nitros are not famous for they are all about RPM.

Grab yourself a good 2.2 electric rig if you want to find the best RC crawling. "thumbsup"

What's a nitro crawler?

Yeah it is a decent reliable basher. Chassis is homemade, pure carbon is not the best thing for nitro engines. A special concoction of my own.
Truth is I don't do pure crawling with this one, more like trail riding with some absurd obstacles. But really this little sirio has more than enough torque to overcome obstacles. But in any case with a big bore 4 stroker I would not worry about torque.

My take on this is that it's not the nitro engine that's the problem, it's the transmission. All the nitro or gas engines that I've seen for RC cars and trucks use a centrifugal clutch. You just haven't got the fine control you need to crawl at very low speeds. A decent servo-operated pressure plate clutch might give you the control, but would be tricky to operate.
Since electric works so well these days, why bother?

I don't understand why anyone uses nitro glow engines for any form of RC (cars, trucks, planes or helis) any more. Gas/spark engines have their place for the really big stuff, but nitro/glow is expensive to run, noisy and messy.

How far are you away from Dorset in the UK? Il show you a nitro crawler that works.

West Cornwall.

How do you get around the clutch engagement and low speed control problem?

littleskull99 07-23-2009 08:49 AM

The gearing works out at 400-1 so it engages real early and there is so much gearing that your already at about 5000rpm (engine) by the time you pull away.

Havent burnt out a clutch yet.

cartronicshn 07-23-2009 08:58 AM

But the original question is, which one would be better to buy, so as far as getting one either prebuilt or in a kit i would say electric as there aren't any readily available nitro crawlers, also the thread's title is, which do you prefer, this is a mostly ep rig powered forum, so my guess would also be electric "thumbsup"

MadForce 07-23-2009 09:06 AM

A decent setup on a centax will be very hard to burn. Most of the guys spitting on nitros are of US origin I guess, cause on this side of the lake nitro engines are still quite popular. The engine I am running costs 230 euro and has 4.11hp output on the setup I am running dynoed. Which brushless setup of similar cost has 3000+ watts of power available for ~4000 rpm? As far as tranny goes if I lock the madforce in 1st I get 11km/h max speed from 38000 rpm with moab XLs. That is more than decent reduction for crawling.

I have to apologize for jacking the thread truly this is an EP oriented forum.

littleskull99 07-23-2009 09:28 AM

Your right cartronicshn, Off on a tangent I go.....

Sorry for the hi-jack op.

picklewagon 07-24-2009 12:23 AM

Nitro rc's are like a**holes, everyone's got one and they all stink! Just kiddin' it would be pretty cool to have a dual nitro MOA, now there's an idea:idea:
