how to cut tire foam?

Hey guys i hear that people are cutting down there tire foams to make it be "Like on a real rig more aired down" how can i do this and do it right. my tire is glued to the rim right now and i am afraid to try and take it off. it feels like the tire will tear. i do not want to spend the money to buy new ones all i want to do is cut then foam down a little so i can crawl better. plz any one out there know how to do it and do it right with out messing it up and can tell me with some pics to if u can. thanks a lot i love this forums. <3

Well, what tires and foams do you have?

To cut the foam, you will need to remove the tire from the rim.

try to boil the tire and all, to loosen the glue. then pull off rim. air out foams and cut away!

To remove tire from rim:
1- wrap tire/wheel in aluminum foil. (like a baked potato)
2- put on cookie sheet and bake in pre-heated 350* oven for 15 minuets.
3- take the wrapped tire/wheels outside 1 at a time and unwrap and peel the tire from the wheel. Of course they will be hot, so use gloves.

This method will keep your house from smelling like a tire factory.

To cut the foam, an electric knife works well, or scissors. I have also used a fine tooth hobby saw and an angle grinder w/ sanding disc. Hollow punches are useful for punching holes in them.

I agree with the baking idea, it has worked well for me. Better than the boiling and faster. As for the cutting of foams I just use a brand new razor blade and it cuts throught the foam with no problem.

What tires and foams? I haven't cut foams down for years:? I've made my own custom foams, bur they are all full donuts.

With a scale build like that I wouldn't worry about it....

I just use an exacto and a LOT of time to get the tires off the rim.

Cutting foam is pretty easy, I've found bread knifes to be the best thing to use, next would be a box cutter would be my second choice, but be careful...

There are two main ways to cut your foams:

Star and V...

i agree on the boiling and the oven trick. done both and they both work great. Most people run a star pattern but i personally like my v-shaped foams better. on my next foams i am going to cut them like a star and then section a V out of the middle. best of both worlds but dont know if its been tested. wanna be a test dummy? haha

btw i think the star is a heckofalot better on sidehills than the v

If you really want to cut down foams, Use a electric turkey carving knife, It cuts like butter. Keeps the foam from compressing while you cut
