| Installing A Cooling Fan
I was just wondering if you could disconnect the red and black from the ESC harness when you have a BEC installed and put them into another plug to power a fan to cool the ESC or the Motor. You would only need the signal wire to go the the reciever, wouldn't you. Any Help Please.

If your rig is getting that hot, something is wrong.

If you are running an external BEC, your ESC should not be getting hot.

I am running a super with worm drive MOA and the motors are getting a little hot. I just wanted to know if the fans could be hooked up that way so they can be turned on/off with the ESC switch.

I don't see why you can't connect the fan like that, assuming that the fan will run on 5v. Current draw will be minimal. Personally, I'd leave the ESC BEC to run the Rx, the external BEC to run the servo(s), and connect the fan directly to the battery. That way, the fan will continue to run after you turn off the ESC - a good thing, in my opinion. It'll cool the motor after a run, and act as a reminder to disconnect the battery. |

What voltage battery are you running? Most cooling fans are around 6 volts. If your running a 3 cell lipo, the fan will spin real fast for about one minute and then quit. Ask me how I know . Hook it up to your BEC.

If you are running 3s, use a 12v computer fan direct to the battery, or a 6/7v fan to the BEC. As Warpig says, car motor fans are normally designed to run directly from a 6-cell NiMH pack at 7.2 volts, while ESC fans run from the ESC's own BEC at 5 volts. Computer fans are normally 12 volts, but will spin (albeit more slowly) on 7 volts. You get a lot more choice of sizes with 12v computer fans, plus they can be a lot cheaper. |
