I'm not sure putting a 2 or 3 spd would make a difference. The motors set up for crawling probably won't put out that much speed regardless of the tranny. If your looking for speed then I would suggest getting a different motor setup and when you want to go crawling just lay off the throttle a bit.

its really depends what you have and what sort of speed your looking for. you will only gain so much with gearing, however im sure with a 3sp tranny (such as the rc4wd 3sp tranny) you could get the truck up to around 20mph with the right motor and batteries. with the gearing in that tranny with axial axles id run 3s lipo and a 35 turn, it will give good control in 4wd and good speed in 2wd.

Theres a great article in a recent rc car action crawler magazine about just this thing. Called project rock racer. Used a 2 speed tranny. Uses a rs 2 transmission, shifted by a servo. Article is pretty cool, couldnt find any of it online to paste in the article.

I run a Summit trans in my scaler and love it. great low end torque and some top end speed.

I love shifting through gears. I wouldn't run it in a comp rig but they're a blast in scalers. I have a tamiya 3-speed rig and a R2 2-speed.

I would recommend the RC4WD R2 2-speed, after putting a decent grease in it, its smooth and quiet.

I am running an E-Maxx tranny in my scaler. It is nice to have another gear to grab when I want more wheel speed.

I saw a cool build a few years back where a guy used the gearbox out of a power drill.

Traxxas Summit is what I hear is recommended for what your looking for; at the same time ive seen alot of people knock it... I thought the 2 speed shifting was pretty cool, along with the locking dif's but they are kinda expensive. Hehe.
