which crawler to get? for christmas im wanting to get into rc crawling/rock racing. this will be my first rc and i dont know what to get. i was thinking of either a vemon crawler, or ax10. my parents will let me have $200 for christmas plus some money ive been savin so around $250 total, im tryin to find a setup that can atleast get me a reliable crawler running for just crawling, but ill keep saving up more for some new things to turn it into a rock racer. me and my dad will be making a big track with a few small jumps but mainly rocks and a few straights to get to top speed. my goal is to be able to get a rock crawler for the back yard around $250 thats reliable, then upgrade it to a small racer for around $70 more and be able to go around 20mph maybe? does anyone have any budget setups they'd like to share? |
$250 dollars for an ax10 is pretty cheap! Where I am from (Canada) just the first ax10 kit still cost more than $300, and that is without electronics, and the rtc's/rtr's are 350 plus. Heck! I think I put more than 700 dollars into my truck just to get it rolling, without upgrades! 20mph is ridiculously fast for a crawler! I think you'll find it will be near impossibly to control on the rocks and it won't have the torque you'll need for going slow. Also the suspension of a crawler like an ax10 is by no means capable of handling well at speed. I would not go for a rock racer if you want to go both fast and slow, I would just buy two different trucks, a crawler for going slow and a rustler vxl, or something like that, for going fast. In the end I think your best bet would be an rtc or an rtr axial rig. |
this is about how fast i want it to go, if that. |
They both look like capable crawlers but if you want both rock racer and rock crawler than maybe you should get the axial ax10 rock racer rtr witch comes with the extra 14pt pinion and front locker witch you can install so it can be a rock crawler. You will then have best of both worlds and still keep within your budget."thumbsup" Here's the site: http://www.tcscrawlers.com/On-Sale-1...2-p-16753.html |
i've seen it before, but couldnt find any videos of how fast itll go, and i dont like the fact that most parts are plastic. |

dude wttwoa if you are looking for something affordable check out the duratrax cliff climber. Or find a dofferent hobby RC ain't cheap. |
i wouldnt get an AX10, everyone has one and rememer, you still need an ESC and Reciever and radio and battery, whitch is EST.100 dollars, venoms are in the 150 range and ive heard ALOT of good things about the venoms, if u dont either of em, i got a mrc RTR for 259, but u can get em as low as 200$, i just had to pay tax, but the MRc, venom, and Axial are amazing crawlers, some of the tip top brands, axial has a RTR kit, check it out sometime ;-)... if u need help or got some questions, just PM me "thumbsup" |
Check out eBay. That's where I got mine. Although, I paid $400 for it. Then dropped close to $700 to overhaul it. On eBay, you can get a decent RTR or ARTR for not a decent price. Which is, the better way to start out. Unlike me. I have been watching that one for some time. There are many RC's on eBay. If you want cheap, go to Radio Shack. For $250 or less, go for an RTR. Just my opinion. Eventually, you can upgrade. |
get the losi nightcrawler! |
here's a bender vid of him bashing a relativly stock rtr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEWCLbKgthU and here's one of the rtc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2WmI33n1Jo Quote:

Axial AX10 RTR - upgrade later, run now! |
if i get the rtr, could i get a faster motor without having to upgrade esc, then get the 55t motor for nothing but rock crawling? |

You could use a 35T, that might be pretty good. A 27T, like the Axial or Wheely King motor is also a likely option. |

Its a setting on the esc, that prevents the rig from rolling backward. A cheap cure for full crawling is an HPI gear reduction box. The gearing is through the floor, all guts and grunt, and its geared so low, you dont roll back. I built a Wheely King crawler (my first crawler), and I put one in with it, cause of money issues. I had an extra Traxxas XL-5 esc, so I tossed it in. The gear box is ~$20. If it fits in your setup, you just bolt the motor to it, and then bolt the unit to the trans. http://www.hpiracing.com/products/en/87634/ http://www.hpiracing.com/graphics/pa...87634_001m.jpg |
