Brushed motors will deliver more power and last longer if they are broken in. You need to repeat the process each time the comm is skimmed, or when new brushes are fitted.
It's even more important with sealed can motors.

Break-in is important for racing, probably not needed for crawling. Like a full-size vehicle, just take it easy for the first run on a new motor.

Brushless motors don't need break-in.

Most motors we use come with curved brushes that match the comm, break-in is not needed. I was told this by an experienced racer.

I tend to break new motors in regardless of type or application.

Just like the other guys said, Racing motors would likely need to be broken in, But for crawling, Not really. Holmes Hobbies even said that most crawling motors would not really benefit much from breaking in.

you really should break in all new motors.

at Holmes Hobbies we have been breaking in all torque master motors
we have had several people contact us about buring up motors because they failed to break them in before running a 4cell pack on the motor.

so yes the motors will last longer and actually perform better after breakin.

and yes most motors today come with curved brushes that conform to the comm.
but when you buy a new motor take a look at the brushes, you will see how detailed they are.
then breakin the motor for about 15-20 min at a low voltage(3.3v-7.4v)
every 4-5 min stop breakin and examin the brushes, you will begin to see the stages that the brushes go through during breakin to truly conform to the comm.

just my $0.02
good luck
