with the traxxas evx-2 waterproof controller you can run up to 4s (16.8v). It would be advised that you install a lvc (low voltage cutoff) so that you don't over discharge your lipos and destroy them.

I have an am TQ-3 3-ch Traxxas radio, but have never heard of an FM. Whats the scoop on that model?

Not sure what traxxas esc your planning on using but the waterproof XL-5 has served me great. it does not have a low voltage cutoff though, but that does not mean you cannot still use a lipo. Just need to pay close attention. Costs about 60 bucks at my local hobby store. Good for a 2 cell lipo or 8 cell Nimh.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but Traxxas only makes AM and 2.4 versions of their 4-channel radios, but not FM. If someone is selling a FM TQ on E-Bay they don't really know what they are selling, they have a hacked radio, or are lying about it.

Yes, big help. That radio should be fine. You might want to modify it to a 3 position 3rd channel, there is a sticky on that in the Electronics Forum, it covers installing the switch and putting in EPA pots.
