Default questions about my new crawler

Hey guys. I'm new to the site, and new to crawling. I just (literally JUST) got my Axial AX-10 from UPS today. Its used, and looks to be stock except the previous owner put on the angled links. It has a Novak (yea I know) 55t motor, and a Rooster ESC. He lost the original pinion gear, and had a 16t on it. He says he had a heating problem with it. Does anyone know the stock size, or a good pinion choice? Also I'm debating what battery combo to go with for long run times. Sorry for the long post, but I'm itching to get this thing going.

hey peterbilt, welcome to the rc rock crawling scene. this usually turns into an addiction witch can be good or bad depending on a few things. anyways... i do believe that a 14tooth pinion is stock. if you want to slow it down more go with a smaller pinion and if you want to go faster go with a bigger pinion. as far as batteries, if your just getting into crawling i would go with a 6 cell battery pack. 1500-3000mah would give you plenty of run time with a 55t motor.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I'm gonna have to run with the pinion I have for awhile. I dont like getting stuff online, (I'm one of those paranoid old guys ya know) and the closest LHS is 80 miles away. But the batteries will be no problem. Between Radio Crap....er shack, and a few friends, I should be good to go.

Yea, eventually I wanna build axel plates, and run splits up front, but for now I'm gonna have to do this all on the cheap. The whole economy, and losing my full time job thing kinda makes it rough lol

Yup, had the same problem that you did when I first got my crawler. Reedy 27t w/ a 18 tooth pinion, ran hot and didn't get to much run time even with a 5000nimh pack. switched to a 10 tooth and a 45 turn and works awesome for crawling. still has decent wheel speed and has very nice control

Best bet would be a 55T on 3cell lipo with a 14T pinion. You'll spend a bit more money on the 3 cell lipo and charger than you will with the NiMh packs. But you'll be much happier in the long run. This combo will get you good wheelspeed and good run times. with around a 2200 mah lipo. Maybe around 30-40 minutes or so if you're not too throttle happy

I run a 1800mah 2s lipo that were made for 1/16 mini slash/revo. They are light as can be, plenty of power, runtime of about 30-40 min in my axial comp crawler with 45T/rooster combo. And the price of those lipos are great, got mine for $30 for 2 of em. T
