Default Newb with ax-10

Hi. I just got an ax-10 from my buddy that's ready to roll. He has done a bit of work with the shocks, wheels, and tires, but for the most part it's close to stock. I'm still starting to do a lot of reading and finding lots of stickys and FaQ's to read, so long story short here is the ax-10

And my 1:1 Jeep

Where do I start?

Take it out and crawl with it for a while. Then you'll have a better idea of what you like about it, and what you want to improve.

I have two suggestions....
1. What servo do you have in there? if its one less than 200, upgrade it to an HS 7955tg, you can find them for about 90. Also, if you have a lipo to run on it, get the front plate that holds a battery and a servo on the front axle

2. your first major upgrade should probably be an swx chassis. they are a direct fit to the ax10 and are like 80 bucks.

these will make it crawl a lot better. But you definetly have a GREAT start

I was going to get a rear lock out kit first, and maybe aluminum C hubs and axles for the front. What's the deal with high steer?

Just so that it doesn't hit the rocks as much. it won't hit the rocks as much plus they are stronger

I just did some crawling. I think I got pretty lucky, just above my house is a neighborhood path/walkway. About 800 feet long filled with large rocks, perfect I need to do some more crawling, but it seems like there were times where I should have been able to power out, but there wasn't enough power. I'll get some specs on the motor, servo, and battery when I get off work in 4 hours. When you get high steer, do you have to change anything on the servo? I think I need to add some small spacers on the tie rod to get a better turn radius.

Is there any way to increase battery life? Are lipo's very good for that? I'm not sure what the main battery is, it's charging now inside, but one of the back up battery packs has 6 cells in it, each are 1.2v 1400 mAh. The main battery has 7 cells.

Yeah, lipos will last longer, even the same mah rating. I have some zippy packs 2s 1800 20c and they last me quite sometime. I run sidewinder esc, vxl motor (don't reccomend), tower pro 945r servo, novak bec (thx the crawler king). Depending on your running gear, your weak link may be your nickle metals. Especially lower packs. Most who run comps with nimh just want their 6-10min of runtime (so I've heard).
Although I'm still newbish some myself, welcome. Hope your diggin your ax10.

Maybe the battery wasn't charged all the way, because the back up 6 cell is lasting a while. All I can make out on the motor is that it's 55 turn.
