I would buy an esc first . You will notice the motor perform better with a good esc so wait to buy a motor after the esc . You have lots of options here so do plenty of research . I try to buy with versatility in mind . A good brushed/brushless esc will allow different motor options for you . I would save more money and buy something really good incase you want to expand to other rigs or maybe volt up . I prefer the Mamba Max Pro because it is a do all esc and it can handle 80amps . Example , I am running two 27turn motors on my scaler and never even heat the MMP up .

What is your budget? For a lower budget, the Castle Creations Sidewinder will work quite well and can be programmed via your computer (quite a few additional options versus programming manually) if you also purchase the Castle Link. For a bit more money, the Holmes Hobbies Torquemaster BR-XL is an excellent ESC and also can be programmed on your computer using the Castle Link. |

An esc will give you far more performance benefits than a new motor.

$50....that will be a tough one. The cheapest I have seen the Sidewinder is ~$70: https://www.ssl-stormerhobbies.com/c...ns&pn=CCMM7701 |

No first hand experience with it, but I've read good things about the RC4WD outcry and I think it's right around the $50 mark. Check out the classifieds and you might find a sidewinder for a good price, gotta be fast though as they don't hang around long in there.

when I started I picked up a tekin combo esc/motor both for 100. they may be cheaper now, that was a couple yr ago. but the fxr has a small footprint, easy to adjust in the field WITHOUT a pc. and the customer service was good. I now have 4 trucks running the fxr with no problems, a real good value. you could buy used though and save some coin. | |
