Default Noob needs servo help

I'm running a clod based c channel crawler and decided to go with Hitec HS5805mg Digital mega scale servos and wired them straight to the battery. I let all the smoke out of them somehow and have heard a few people talk about becs and was wandering what a good choice would be or if i really need one. Also wandered if hitec would warenty these servos.

You always need a BEC on a crawler if you aren't running it off it's own battery pack. What size battery (volts) did you hook it up to? They are only rated at 6V.

i ran it off a 6 cell 7.2 volt battery. But tower hobbies website says not to that particalar servo through a bec or seed control the servo can handler 7.2 volts. but the packing from hitec says 6 volts. so that is probably why i cooked them. Do you have a recomindation as to which bec to purchase.
