Opinions on this build idea.

As the title says, i am looking for opinions on this build idea for my first crawler. I am trying to keep it under 500$ to start. I like the looks of a full crawler and want the performance of a full crawler. I will probably trail run it a little bit, rock racer type, but mostly will be trying to climb stuff it shouldn't be able to climb. :lmao:

Losi 1/10 Comp Crawler Race Roller $199.00
Spektrum DX3E 3Ch DSM Surface Radio $89.99
Castle Creations 1/10 Sidewinder Sport ESC + 5700 kV cm $132.99
or Tekin FXR Crawler Combo 35T $119.99
Venom Racing 3000mah 6 Cell 7.2v NiMh Battery $19.99
Racers Edge SureCharge 1500 Lithium Balancing Charger $49.99

This setup is right around $490.

My plans were to use the servo that comes with the radio for steering just to get me going for a month or so, then move that server to the dig once i can get a real servo for the steering. Also get a bec once i get the new steering servo. Looking for a setup that i would be able to run multi battery packs back to back so i can get a couple hours of run time.

Thanks :)

Based on the search I just did...that battery and charger aren't gonna be compatible. The battery is a nimh and the charger is a lipo charger. I recommend getting a charger/balancer that will charge nimh, nicd, and lipo. Something like this:

I would also recommend getting lipo batteries instead of nimh. Ultimately you'll probably convert to them anyway, so do a little reading and see if you wanna go for it.

Thanks, i could of swore i read that it would do up to 12cell nimh, but guess that was a different charger i was reading.

If you went with NiMH, where are you planning on mounting them? The LCC has a small battery mount...sized for single small Lipo pack (~1300-1650 mah)

Might look at the LNC ($300 msrp)...it has a large battery tray if you want long run times, and is RTR (without battery and charger)

not sure on the battery, tho i might look in to a small lipo and for run times just get a couple battery's over time. I was looking at the LNC but i didn't want to buy that then have to buy the dig, new radio and replace a bunch of stuff right off the bat. LiPo batterys are spendy, might have to consider another kit. Is there any ARTR kits so that i can have decent electronics? I have noticed axial kits are no where to be found any more. Dig isn't that important cause i wont be competing so wont bother me to use reverse, and if i do compete i can always just do sportsman class for a bit.

I agree if your going to invest in a rig you might as well go lipo.

Duuuuuuuude 01-25-2011 11:53 AM

Lipos are not spendy. Shop around.

Which motor / ESC would you recommended out of the 2 i listed, or other option close to those price ranges? Will probably gear slightly higher then normal for little extra wheel speed.

Would this be something to consider, or would a shafty be better for a rock racer type?

Both speedos

Both of those speed controllers are great. The FXR is a little smaller so if size and weight is a concern you might lean that way.

As for the battery I am with everyone else, find a descent lipo and you should be happy. Don't buy the cheapest one you can find or you may regret it.

Why i as asking about the ESC is one is brushless and other is brushed. Not sure what one would be better for the LCC.

I'd get something that can do both, just in case. A Sidewinder or Mamba Max Pro for instance...

Any one know if that battery will fit in the LCC? I cant seem to find any specs on the max size for the battery tray.

Or just order two of these...

Also what do you think of this combo?

Any suggestions is welcome :) Also anything i can save a little money on would be great :)

Duuuuuuuude 01-26-2011 08:59 PM

Personally, I'd not spend the money on the esc and motor. Both are good choices, but I'd go with a sidewinder and a good brushed motor, then take the money I saved and get this radio, which comes with 2 receivers (for another rc if you have one or think you will get one, nobody ever has just one...lol) and is capable of handling 5 more.

dabbill 01-26-2011 09:15 PM

What radio is that? You didn't say a name or link one. :)

Pretty much everything i have read about the LCC is that you should run brushless. What motor do you recommend for brushed?

Can't really help you on that one. Have you tried looking in the LCC section?

Erik D_lux 01-26-2011 11:48 PM

I run a Mamba max Pro with a Novak Ballistic 18.5t motor. It has been working well for me. I would like to try a Tekin motor just for fun in the future. I really like my mamba max pro though. Good up to 6s so it should satisfy me for awhile.

Also, check out the batteries that I supply specifically for the LCC. They fit perfect and the 1800mah allows for longer run times.
