Default Newbie from CA

Hello, I'm Mico. I'll be staying in Akasaka, Minato Tokyo in the next 4 days. I'm planning to take the chance to get an RC truck or buggy while I'm at it. Any good recommendation for a hobby shop in Tokyo where I can purchase one? I know Akihabara area is a good place to start. Thanks.

Maybe you could order this plus all the necessities:
  • 35t open endbell motor
  • wp1080 esc
  • high torque metal gear servo (20kg/275oz or more)
  • GT3C radio system with lipo battery & usb charger
  • 2200mah 3s battery
  • balance charger
  • plugs/adapters that match your battery, esc, and charger
  • lexan paint
  • lexan scissors
  • paint masking tape
  • tools to put it all together

...and have it delivered to wherever you're staying by the time you arrive?

I just got back from Tokyo, tam tam is in akihabara and was one of the best I found. There is also a tamiya shop near ginza with a great selection of rc in the basement. It's the address below.

Japan, 〒105-0004 Tōkyō-to, Minato-ku, Shinbashi, 4 Chome−7−2, 「6 東洋 海事 ビル

Just a heads up though the rc kits are very expensive for some reason, we get better prices here in the us

Being from CA my self you should wait to get back and maybe try Sheldon's Hobbies. There is one in San Jose and another in Milpitas.

Nice search results to all, but I've also found it's usually cheaper in the US even though it's farther to ship product made in Taiwan and China. Check your LHS and if they don't have it RPP Hobby is good.

Howdy!

I'm a newbie to this forum but not to Japan. The websites linked to list lots of stuff available already in the US. The US prices are much lower than in Japan, by a fair margin...20%?, as pointed out already.

I suppose what you'd want to look for in Akihabara are any items uniquely available there, perhaps, and not so common in the US. Maybe a custom controller? Or a wireless camera setup? (These are probably cheaper elsewhere, but unique is unique.)

How about a 7" action figure to put inside your crawler, if/when you have one with a scale interior? Or custom product logos (marketing) for Japanese companies, hard to find in the US?

go to akihabara for the experience alone! but yeah i would not buy an RC there. more to lug around in the airport? nah, skip it. mailing stuff from japan (privately) to your residence here in CA is also crazy expensive.

but yeah go to akiba! (short for akihabara) i went there maybe once a month during my 3 years of duty in japan. TamTam was my favorite shop, but not the one in akiba. its kinda small. i went to the one in Sagamihara on route 16, closer to yokohama.

oh man... i miss japan!!!

Definitely. It's been a LONG time since I was last in Japan. Since then I've had a kid and he's grown up enough (12) to want to visit Japan himself. Yeesh!
