Just Discovered RcCrawling!

1st post!
I stumbled accross these things on youtube last night and I thought now that would be something I could really get into. I mean whats not to love about rock crawling in your back yard!? I also seen the oppurtunity for a chance to bond with my son and daughters and get them outside and sharing something with their father. Im so glad I found this site I was hoping there would be a decent forum out there but rccrawler blew my mind! Im gonna make good use of search and the stickys are a great help too! I really want to start with a kit that way I can put it together and maybe find a smaller rtr truck for the kids (mostly my son will probably be the one to be interested) to drive. I have read where these things become addicting and I can already see that about it. I know it may take me awhile to get started but Im sure this site is going to be the perfect first step. So once again thanks for the great site and I hope to be posting pics of my first build soon!

scx10 is a good starter, had one last year and my (at the time, 6yr old) loved it!
now he bombs around in my wraith at 7yr's old.

I'd definitely look at some sort of rock racer or scaler. A comp crawler may look fun, but isn't very good as a toy for the kids. The issue with a scaler is the tires are smaller and they tend to get stuck more often. Read, read, and read some more and you'll find something that will work for you. My son is 4 and he's been driving since he was 2.5.

Awesome! Def gonna check out the losi mini! I really love the scalers maybe that can be dad's rig after i get something to start out on!
But i love the whole going slow and crawling just like the big trucks do!

i have an old rc monster truck from the mid 90's its called "The Extreme Machine" lookis like a green f150. Im pretty sure i could salvage some parts from it maybe start with a frame or something?

Welcome! I got into this for the same reason and now both my kids and my wife are involved in it. Both my kids got scx10 Dingo's and the absolutely love them.

There is a wealth of knowledge in this site so don't hesitate to ask questions!

Honestly you might want to reconsider the smaller scale truck. The 1/10 are much easier to work on and are more fun to drive for the kids because they don't get stuck as much. My son drives a Mini ERevo brushless when he wants fast and his AX10 with Jeep Comanchee body (sorta scale looking) when he wants to run over stuff. I'll drive my Wraith with both because it's fast enough and can go where I need it to. We also have a 1/16 Traxxas drift Rally, but I stole the ESC out of it and probably need to get another one now.

Anyway, moral of the story, the bigger trucks might be a little intimidating at first due to size, but I think you'll be happier with the ownership. If you're worried about speed, put in a smaller pinion or make sure you have a radio that you can turn down the end point so they can't go as fast.

The best part is Mom fully supports Daddy and Son working on the cars together. He even has his own bar stool to sit on while we work on stuff on the bench. He mostly just takes the tires on and off and pretends while I fix what we broke or modify it based on what he decides. It's good fun and now that RC's have come along so much in the last couple years they are more fun to get hobby grade stuff instead of the cheap throw away ones from the department store.

I like the idea of building from the start. i wonder how hard it would be to buy it piece at a time and end up with a unique rock crawler. i love the mini yota axles and that sort of thing

get you a dingo kit if you want to build it yourself. Add motor speedo and servo of your choice.

I would reccomend futaba 4pl radio
castle bec
tekin rs pro
lrp or tekin 17.5 motor
3s 2000 to 4000 mah battery ( i reccomend gen ace from hobby parts)
hobbico cs-170 servo
I would order mip drive shafts as well
It might cost a bit but if you can afford it, you won't be buying things twice

I definately agree. i got a mini e revo for myself as my first hobby grade car. it didn't take me very long at all to grow out of it. smaller is easier to break and trickier to work on. Such tiny screws and tight clearances. U will appreciate a 1/10 scale a lot more when u really get into working on them.

well after doing some research i think im leaning towards the axial scx10. I love the scaled down look and the tamiya's look expensive and i can always use one of their bodies on the axial anyway.

although Tamiya makes SWEET bodies (styrene) i have to say ive never been impressed with the plastic used on them. My clodbuster is in a bin cuz i got sick of it busting on me! brittle ass ABS used from the 80's and same shit used in walmart toys imo. lol

youll be better off with an SCX10 using a Tamiya shell.

anyone have any exp with the rock force? i think it could be a contender and they seem to have the lowest kit price i think.
