| New guy wants to try crawling...what should I get?
Hey guys. So I'm looking into my very first crawler. I have RC Car experience, so I'm not new to the hobby exactly. Now I'm not sure if I'm going to like crawling, so I would like a cheap crawler to just get me introduced to it. The two I'm looking at are the Exceed Maxstone 1/10 and the Redcat RS10 XT. Now I know these aren't top of the line vehicles, but I thought they would be good to get my feet wet in crawling. The thing I don't like about the RS10 XT though is that it has dual motors. Any opinons on which of the two would be the best, or any other suggestions? I'm looking for crawlers that are $160 and below to get me started out.

Thanks for the replies. The only problem with axial though is that its expensive!!! I don't think I would want to get something that expensive to start with.

Yes it is expensive however with the cheaper rigs you most likely will find it hard to get replacement parts. Without the access to what you need to stay running will come frustration which in the end will just lessen your interest. Save a little more and wait a bit longer to get an AX10.

Okay cool thanks guys. The thing is though, how often do you even break parts on a crawler? lets say I'm just doing crawling for fun and not comp...you know, mild stuff. Wouldn't I break far less parts?

Since I upgraded my SCX10 the first time, all I've damaged are the link ends (those can be repaired with red thread lock), and the occasional plastic inner c's and steering knuckles. Now the Wraith, thats a different story haha | |

another option to consider would be the HPI Crawler King. for $230 rtr (used a discount code) from tower hobbies.I am very impressed. I bought it for the wife to go crawling with me. They even offer to split the payments into 3 installments for ya. let me kno if you need the codes for discount

Cool thanks guys. I'm not really going to be climbing any insane hills. And actually, I think I would be doing more scaling type things. ochevys54 - Actually, the crawler king doesn't look too bad! I guess I'm willing to spend that much on it. Does it perform well? Last edited by electricrc68; 11-13-2012 at 08:15 PM. |

it has taken everything i have thrown at it so far. a little top heavy and the steering linkage is a little awkward to look at. it located in the rear and runs all the way up front, on axel steering is going to be the first upgrade. also, being a standard servo it is a little weak in my opinion, but I did expect that and plan on boosting that also but it does work fine as is.

I loved my redcat my only regret with it was i loved scale loking stuff so if your sure your just looking to see if you like crawling and you know you don't want to scale comp crawl every it might not be a bad buy but if you find your self watch scale vids and you seem to like the more scale side of the hobby get a axial

I'm new also, I would suggest watching some YouTube videos of the rigs you have in mind to see what they will do. That may help save you from buying an unwanted one also. 2 motors can be better than messing with shafts IMHO, but I was tired of 1:1 shafts so I may be slightly biased there.

I started out with an Axial rtr new for $200 on ebay but I eventually did some upgrades. Also one thing you should do is find a local rc crawling club and go to one of their events or comps, so you can see what so of these crawlers can actually do. In turn this might help you decide on what you want your crawler to do. It might save you money in the long run if you do some mods and upgrades.

I also would tell you to spend a few more $$ and get one of the Axial SCX10 trucks. Upgrade and replacement parts are available at most hobby shops. If you don't end up liking it then you can always sell an Axial rig easily. And depending on how and on what you are driving...parts do break. And not being able to play with your new toy because of an inexpensive part, that you have a hard time getting stinks!!!! |
