I read all the stuff or a lot of it and I kind of figured it out maybe, but I only looked at the stuff from about 2011 up. I figured with most electronics after a couple of years go by everything changes. All and all I'm still a little confused but I guess I'll muddle through it.

You'd think Axial could put in their instructions min and max of battery sizes or a suggested size.

What specifically are you confused about?

A quick google search of 'lipo basics' turned up this resource: Understanding RC LiPo Batteries Which after a quick skim seems to have pretty much everything needed to know. Like anything mechanical/electrical, respect it and it won't hurt you.

Sounds like ya better stick with some nimh stick pack bud

Really though these guys gave the best links for quick info. Lipo's are great and safe when charged and used properly. Know your discharge/charge rates cause that's where problemswill arise. And cell counts if your worried bout your motor/esc life
Read up and keep it safe

1300 to 2200 mAh packs have several advantages. Lighter, easier to position in the chassis (smaller), and cheaper.
Smaller packs also force you to take a break to swap out packs. That's a pretty good time to look the rig over for damage and let the electronics cool for a bit. My SCX conversion runs 14/87 gears, 1.9 wheels & tires, Micro Sidewinder ESC, and a 35 turn Holmes TorqueMaster motor. Even on a 1300 mAh pack, I can still easily get 45 mins run time.
And it's kinda nice not having a heavy brick on top of the chassis pulling me over every time I try to crawl up something. For that reason, my 13,500 mAh pack doesn't see much use.

what the heck is 20c --- 50c or what ever, stand for?

Means the battery can sustain a load 20x the Capacity of the battery, and the voltage will remain within stable parameters. A 2-part number such as 35C/70C means the pack will sustain a constant 35x the Capacity, and a momentary draw of 70x the Capacity.

I know what the volt 7.4 is, can you go higher?

7.4 is a nominal voltage for a 2S LiPo pack. A fully charged LiPo cell measures at no more than 4.2 volts, or 8.4 volts for a fully charged 2S pack. So just solely by charging the pack you're going to exceed 7.4 volts. Your next step would be a 3S LiPo, that'll put you up to 11.1 volts advertised, 12.6 volts fully charged. I don't know if your ESC will tolerate 3S without an external BEC, but with a lower turn motor and higher gearing than I have, I don't think I'd recommend 3S for you anyway.

what the heck is 2s or what ever, stand for?

Inside a 2S pack, there are 2 individual LiPo cells connected in series. A number like 4S2P would be a pack that has eight individual LiPo cells 4 sets of two cells would be connected in series, each set would be two cells connected in parallel.

And I know I'm definitely a newbe.

Weren't we all, at some point.......
Clear as mud?

Trubble, that is good information. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. My SCX10 is completely stock right out of the box. If I can find it, I think I'm gonna go with a 2s 3300 to 4000 mah 30-40c battery and for the charger I'm thinking Thunder AC680. My neighbor that is into stadium/short course trucks thought that I would fry a brushed motor with Lipo battery.

If I stay with the 7.4 volt battery I think I'll be ok.

That battery range will be fine for the SCX. You wont fry anything running the stock electronics on a 2S battery. Its actually built for using those batterys
