Default Diff Grease

Hey everyone. I just installed some OD gears on my scx10 and now there isn't much grease left in the diff (almost none really) and i was wondering if it will be alright to run it pretty much without any diff grease?

So... self answered time for me to hijack this thread..

I greased my diffs and trans with normal wheel bearing grease. In about 1/2 mile worth of running I pulled the rear down to install UD gears and found my red grease to mostly be metalic grey... I did shim both diffs at at this time but is that amount of wear normal on stock gears?

Just noticed this forum pulls similar threads below.. Some fancy stuff here.. I'll read a little.

Should be fine. Not only is the grease grey from wear on the gears, it's also from the dust that gets into everything. If you've ever rebuild sealed differentials on 1/8th scale RCs I'm sure you've seen that the clear silicone fluid comes out BLACK fairly quickly. It doesn't take much contamination to change the color markedly.

No grease is bad, your gears will wear really quickly.
The marine grease should be fine. If you find it is too thick and makes too much resistance to spin the gears you can switch to an automotive grease such as Lucas Red and Tacky grease.

In my reading the "similar" threads didn't adress the look.

My grease was a conoco red #2. Similar to red and tacky.. just didn't think it would have gotten crappy so quickly.

You may have shimmed them too tight, but the stock gears are pot metal! They wear out fast if you drive it a lot

I've been using Amsoil synthetic grease I had left over when I used to work on motorcycles. Still have over half a tub of it. Seems to work well and I haven't noticed it turning a different color in any of my rigs after hard usage. But I clean out the diffs and trans yearly though.
