| Which battery for axial sxc10
I bought a RTR kit and looking for a battery with at least an hour runtime. I believe I can run 2s with the stock wax and if I got a BEC can run 3. No plans right now to go mod crazy so should I just get a 2s or will a 3s be that much better?

I just got the Axial SCX10 G6 Falken RTR, here is the battery and charger I bought. The only issue I had was needing to change the connectors...just bought a jumper. After several years out of the hobby A year back or so... I purchased a new RTR plus a charger and a LiPo recommended by my local hobby store at the time of purchase. I regret not knowing more about the matter before throwing my coin into that black hole. I initially purchased this LHS 2s 5000mah 50C LiPo Think I got upwards of 6+ hours run time on this ^ 2s... was rolling a 27T motor, geared stock (87/20). IMO a 5000mah LiPo battery is not really lite, nor small seemingly bulky and awkward just about anywhere ya mount it. But it's hard case and it's higher discharge performance makes it more desirable... and costly. So... if it has to be a 2s 5000mah single... best to be mounted 90* to/on the frame rails, just forward of the transmission. ^ discussion: Jevne Racing Recon Brick SCX10 Battery Plate or simply make your own. I only used my 2s maybe twice. Then switched to 3s LiPo's. Had I known what I was doing in the first place. I would have went with 3s LiPo's from the start. Running 3s required the additional purchase of an external BEC and my ESC's internal BEC was disabled. (+ wire removed from RX plug) I use Castle Creation's e components... I have the CC link as well, which allows making adjustments to most of my CC e components using my laptop. My scx-10 chassis/drive train is relatively stock... including the plastic transmission gears. Holds up to 3s use... as long as ya have a controlling finger... and the slipper on the spur gear isn't excessively tightened. I have a steel set of tranny gears waiting for install... but dang... my final plastic gear set hasn't stripped yet ^ it's usually the idler gear that fails. Anyways... I now use... HP 11.1v 2200mah 3S 30c LiPo battery The price is great... they work good... and have been reliable. at least in running my 55T motor with it. I balance charge mine at a rate of 2.1A they have never puffed on me - charge/discharge. A lower wind motor or higher charge rate might be harder on it tho' I can't say. What I can say is... I get about 1.5 hours run time using these 3s 2200mah LiPo's ^ partially due to my 55T motor and low gearing. A lower wind motor or taller gearing could likely net less. But I'd think even with a 27T motor (geared properly)... running on 2s... one could expect at least 1 hour run times. and then some. BTW a 3s Lipo actually performs more efficiently then a 2s so if geared properly... a 3s will often offer somewhat longer run times. and while supplying improved low end torque/power. ^ just sayin' Currently I run dual 3s 2200mah LiPo's wired parallel in saddle pak type config. Longer run times for sure... x2 2200mah = 4400mah tho' somewhat heavier when combined... The COG is low and the duals ballast each other. I actually prefer some weight on my crawler. Seems like it crawls more true to scale... displaying a more realistic ride. Pictars of muh duals... 'cuz I was bored Lol current layout... and before inclusion of the parallel wiring harness. 1st round.... mounted to the stock plastic sliders... If going fast is your thing... I would only run a lite weight single and mount it cross-width on the frame just forward of the transmission. |

It would be best to purchase an external BEC that allows for voltage adjustment... so the owner can select/adjust the BEC voltage wanted. ie: I push 7.4v thru my RX using my CC BEC. works fine... but ya gotta be sure your RX can handle the input voltage. Alternatively... a BEC can be wired to power the servo directly leaving the ESC's internal BEC to power the RX. ^ probably a better thought, if considering the use an HO type servo producing 300+ oz/in of torque. I use a Solar D772 HO servo... it runs well thru my RX at 7.4v... my Axial AR3 RX has held up fine to 7.4v run thru it. ^ no brown outs or power starvation. The eco power 5000mAh 2s from amain is a fairly good option. Like taco crawler pointed out, just go 3s lipo from the start. Since it's a crawler the amperage is fairly low compared to say a short course truck. The benefits of a high discharge rating will likely not be noticeable.

I know how everyone likes to brag about 4+ hours of runtime off of their 5000mah packs. I have a bunch of 4000 mah and 2200 mah packs. Whenever possible I run the smaller, lighter 2200's in my crawlers. The difference in capability is readily noticable going from the heavy 4000 mah packs to the 2200. Lower COG is the biggest difference which equals less rolling over, increased stability, and better climbing ability. I still manage to get over an hour of runtime off of the 2200mah packs. Even in a brushless Twin Hammers I get about 45 minutes out of a 2200. I've had good luck with the Turnigy 2200 40C 2s packs, as well as the Turnigy Nanotech 2200 25C 2s packs. Best part is they are cheap, at about $11 each. I've been in this hobby for years now and just don't feel the need for 3s power in a scale crawler. Other power hungry individuals insist you need 3s to have fun. To each his own I suppose. |

Volt up and gear down. It gives you a broader rpm range. To each their own though. I started on 2s then went to 3s and never looked back but that's just me and the terrain I run on.
