Default chassis

Hey I was wondering if you guy could check this picture our and give me some feedback and tell me if you think it will work. i am making a chassis with 2 pieces lexan that will be separated by threaded aluminum rods. The red dots represent the link mounting points and the green dots is where the threaded aluminum is going to separate the 2 pieces. and the purple things are the electronics. Thanks for any comments and sugestion!!! Happy holidays!!

The lower green dots are to low. You won't be able to get full compression because the driveshaft will hit your alum spacer.

It should work fine, but I would move the upper and lower link mounts closer together.

Is the lexan being used to make templates or are you going to run it with the lexan chassis

He said the green dots are where the chassis seperaters are going to go, not where the shocks will be mounted.

Anyway, the lexan probably won't hold up on the rocks, unless you use dreally thick stuff. Also, you could epoxy 2 or 3 sheets of lexan together to make a kind of laminate. That would work very well, as it would flex more under impact.

I understood that, personal experience tells me it(It=the alum spacer used to attach the chassis halves together) will hit the driveshaft when you try to articulate.

To fix it, just trade spots for your upper link holes, those should be lower anyways.

He said in his first post that he was going to be using Clod axles, so no driveshafts to worry about.

In that case, I would suggest something like ah this..

The brown at the bottom being a skid plate of the same material.

I usually stay away from threads like this because I end up unintentionally starting a fight. I'll try to fully explain my thoughts to avoid that.

When someone talks about building a chassis out of a non-standard material, I assume it means they don't have the tools or materials to build one right. To me this means you will be using hand tools and the build process will be time consuming and possibly sloppy.

I then ask myself, how much is my time worth. Your numbers will probably vary from mine on that one, but that isn't the point. The point is for $60 you can get a Vertical Smile Chassis that works very well for clod builds, or if you are not dead set on a 4 linked TVP chassis a Pimp Cane is less than $50. Even if you make $5 an hour, a Vertical Smile is like working 12 hours. Can you match the quality, functionality and style of that chassis in 6 hours?

If you are in it just for the experience of building it, more power to you. I appreciate the "I'd rather build than buy" mindset!

In the long run, if you are going to build it and then not be happy with it, you are way ahead of the game to buy something instead of wasting time and materials. If you have skills and want the experience, go for it!

*I am not advertising for either chassis I mentioned, it's just ones I have experience with and know the pricing of off the top of my head. Both are good, but there are many others to choose from.

Well, speaking as someone who has "been there and done that", if he he a kid, and thus doesn't work, his time is worthless. So, with $0.50 worth of plastic and a load of otherwise useless time, he can build a crawler.
