Default 1.9 or 2.2? Why build a 1.9?

So here's a stupid question...

It seems like a lot of guys are selling or parting ways with their 2.2 rigs and focusing primarily on 1.9s. What I'd like to know is...why?

Is it more challenging? Is it because most scale built rigs are 1.9 based? Are more comps now focused on 1.9?

Here's why: I'm starting another Wraith based build just because I like the geometry, functionality, and simplicity of all the Axial based platforms. I've read several threads covering Wraiths converted to 1.9. I've considered doing the same. But I hesitate because I wonder if I'll severally limit the rigs capabilities and ruin some of the fun. I'm guessing I won't be able to use the big boy motors such as the ROC412 or the HH 3500 as I would think the rig would be very unstable at higher speeds with a narrower width. But, I've never seen a 1.9 Wraith except for on this forum.

I'm considering building this one as a 1.9. What are your reasons for doing the same? Why the shift towards 1.9 based stuff?

This is just my opinion. First of all 1.9 gives a more scale appearance. 2.2's look...... well not so scale, more gangsterish. The bodies that are commonly used scale out better as well with the smaller wheel. Last, 1.9 gives you many options in tire size that a 2.2 cannot touch. The 1.9 makes the terrain that you run on more of a challenge instead of just rolling over stuff without effort. the 1.9 cause you to think,

Thanks the reply, makes sense. I didn't realize there were more tire options for 1.9

1.9s are smaller, so naturally they don't have the ability to roll over stuff as easily. Sure you can still run a powerful brushless system in a 1.9 wraith. A lot of scx driveline parts are compatible with the wraith. Many people run bl in scxs

Funny, a couple of us in our club have switched over from 1.9 rigs to 2.2's (Wraiths and CR01's) for something different. We are not just "rolling over" the 1.9 lines, we're looking for new lines that we could not do with a 1.9 rig. Opened up whole new areas of our crawling spot that were off limits before.

Concept goes both ways of course. Build both, you won't regret it.

What axles do most use for a 1.9? SCX10? Doesn't the RC4WD stuff swap in as well?

I've seen SCX, RC4WD and Ascender axles on 1.9 Wraiths, coolest ones I've seen were on Ascender axles.

One of my favorites:
Wrascenderaith?

Guy at LHS has sweet 1.9 Wraith on Ascender axles too.

DUDE nothing against RC4WD (I love their bodies, accessories, and tires) but I would avoid their axles especially if your talking brushless power. Check out the new SSD housings and stuff them with whatever vendors scx/ax axial components you choose

Good to know...can they be upgraded enough? Seems like they're easy to find on the for sale forums. Would built SCX10 axles be sufficient?

Built SCX axles are the strongest setup on the market.

Well, the first time i saw a 1:1 Wrangler i thought it was the coolest car in the world (must have been a Renegade in a movie when i was much younger). Except those small stock tires... Looked so out of proportion. So, now i try to build cars that i cannot afford in real life and how i like 'm to be. Rugged, bad ass vehicles. Ready to take on the world . 1.9's just didn't do it for me. Of course i can force a rig on 1.9's to take an obstacle. But i like to see the car (and tires and suspension) work to overcome an obstacle that at first sight looked nearly impossible. 1.9's just limit my world .

Kinda feeling the same way! lol I'm sure for those that have been involved in the hobby for quite some time, the added challenge of a 1.9 is a welcomed one. But why not build the baddest thing on 4-wheels! Ha!

because its more fun to kick "the baddest thing on 4-wheels!" 's *** with a 1.9 truck

i started with 1.55 then went 2.2 and quickly parted that truck out. i have a heavily built 1.9 that goes everywhere my built wraith did and more

What all did you have to do to make it "heavily" built and just as capable as your 2.2?

I've pulled too many "built" 1.9 rigs up and out of stuff. I'll stick with 2.2.

First off, let me say, I agree with everything you said. In 1/10 scale, 1.9, 1.7, and 1.5 tires look more realistic on a 1/10 body. What throws it off on an scx10 is that gargantuan pumpkin on the axles. In my opinion, they only look good on a 1/8 or 1/6 truck with 2.2's.

2.2's are definitely too big for a 1/10 truck, unless you're making a mud or monster truck.
